If you do get a second hand one, thoroughly check the wire feed mechanism...it must be completely smooth. Nothing worse than a MIG with this problem!
Good hunting
John :)

I fairly recently bought a DC one as they were on special offer at less that half price, in fact I sold my old one for nearly as much. For a novice like me they are much easier to strike and maintain an arc with. They still burn holes in thin metal though - or is it me.

I'd really like to have a go at TIG welding.....I'm fine at oxy, MIG and arc but I've never tried TIG. Don't do much welding anyway, these days.
I do like the carbon arc brazing rods though, used with a normal arc welder - but MIG has taken over from this.
John :)

Okay... I have just bought an arc welder with a spot attachment. That will do me for now I think as it will alow me to spot sme new steel in. Has anyone used a spot attachment before though??? Any advice?

Am still after a MIG but believe the spot attachment for me will be better!

I used to weld on a daily basis with arc and oxy acet about 20 years ago, but altho I had a go with MIG back then, I never ever got hang of it- so ended up always welding cars with gas. But I need to move with the times....

I used one of those carbon arc attachments for welding aluminium, I used to do diesel conversions and changed shape of the the sump of many a Perkins 4/108 engine. I cut the whole bottom off one and reduced its depth, I spent hours trying to weld it together again but its a very precise art, a few degrees to hot and it turns to water, I managed it eventually but got my hands and arms severly sunburnt!

I didn't realise you could weld aluminium with these
Mind you, I've never managed to weld aluminium ever!
John :)

They do special rods for it, but believe me its not easy, well not for me anyway

Were you converting these to dry sump, Peter - for marine use or something?
John :)
