14.4v tools need 14.4v batteries..
the dewalt charger will charge any of the same batteries in the range ( ie the regular batteries, not the newer design Li-Ion bateries.. )

if your charger is yellow it will do the Ni-MH as well as the Ni-Cad

just to confuse the situation
the lithium ion li-ion charger is yellow and will charge all batteries from 7.2 to 18v 10 years old till new ;)

the batteries for each voltage are forward and backward compatable as are all tools

the lower voltage [power] batteries in the dewalt range often fit larger tools but at the reduced power off the battery voltage
the battery voltage is equivilent to the engine with the ah the fuel tank
so a 18v battery is half the power off a 36v battery and a 1.3ah [amp hour ]battery will last about half as long as a 2.6 ah battery giving no more power just longer run time

no you can't.. I've already told you that 14.4V tools need 14.4v batteries..
howeever, he is saying that you can use the 14.4V batteries in the 18V tools but without nearly as much power, provding that they will physically fit.. ( 14.4V batteries are smaller.. )

the ah of the battery is of little concern, they just go flat faster if they are lower ah.

as ColJack says no larger batteries wont fit and never try it or reverse the battery by mistake as that will blow the variable speed

i only know that the 14.4 fit the 18v because i was helping my freind with his decking using my 18v dewalt and forgot to take a second battery so me being me when i put my battery in his charger tried the 14.4v and it fitted lol

same applies to some bosch 14.4 and24v[dont know about 18v]

but dont even consider using the smaller batteries as you have the power off the lower batteries with the extra weight and cost off the bigger tool
