Sounds like a load of rubbish to me. Before the water is admitted into the pipework the bladder completely fills the vessel. So there could only be a bit of trapped air in the connecting pipework. If any air is trapped then it won't take long for it to be absorbed into the water under 3 bar pressure. So after a few days it will all have gone.

Sorry mate I don't have a link, it's just common practice. Most potable EVs have a pre-charge pressure of 3Bar. Sealed system Red EVs have a pre-charge pressure of 1.5Bar.
The common practice is ALL EVs should have the tapping on the top.

Of course you'll know then that the pipe going to the EV is at negative pressure??!! Completely dead water.

Me thinks not. Bladder is what the water goes into. Air is between bladder and vessel. Bladder will be flat like a balloon waiting to be blown up (by expansion water)
Expansion vessels in boilers often fitted with valve uppermost but some like Vaillant VCW will have the valve at the bottom (same model seen the valve at the top too)
If thats the case how does any pressure get transfered to the expansion vessel ?

Sorry, I'm not quite correct. What I should have said; Where the EV pipe is connected to the system is a nautral point & the pipe is never on + or _ system pressure when the circulation pump is running. Of course the EV is expanding when the system water heats up, but the water in the pipe leading to the EV is static. In most cimmersial systems with steel pipe, this would be piped in copper, as if it were done in steel it'd corrode.
As dumbrill states the amount of air would be minimal.
Have fitted these and shows the arrangement of the membrane clearly.

The removable membrane types like the floor standing ultra-pro evo have the water inlet at the bottom and the water fills the menbrane afaik.

This thread is getting silly. The Op wanted to know how to fix the noise, which a couple of us have suggested how to do. Knowing how an expansion vessel works is not brain surgery, also quite amused by the comments of one certain Glaswegian

I'd of thought Danny deserves a little more respect than that Micky son??!!
Any accumulator is only as good as the bladder, and to be frank, if they are as good as the EVs then they're a complete waste of money. I know of serveral failures where they're resorting to breaker tanks & pumps.
Mickey, to you and other folk repairing boiler day in day out expansion vessels indeed are no rocket science. This section is visited by general public who may or MAY NOT know what is inside an expansion vessel.
Respect man, having greater knowledge than others around you does not make you a big man. I would have thought this would make a man of knowledge more understanding towards others on lower rungs on ladder of knowledge.
I have seen people in the trade fitting red vessels on hot water systems. I wonder what you would have to say about that.

Like my good self, he has a great affection for Vokeras, but that's where the similarities end. Danny has worked extensively on Vokeras & has a great insight to not only the workings of these appliances, also the repair of the same. He always gives a straight honest answer to any thread he replies too.
