I agree anything to get an extra drink. But yes there are many who still have to work. Now retired but have done my fair share from council gritters to Falklands power station the only year I could not get home at all for Christmas and New Year.

Not done xmas day for two years now but ones i remember.

Xmas day, pub celler sump pump seizes, end up wading in about foot of stagnant water

xmas day, kitchen power rcd trips in restaurant when about 80 people booked for dinner.

Xmas day, OAP calls us out for main rcd tripping even though he says its done it nearly every day for weeks.

Xmas day, dishwasher switch in pub, imperial pyro pot decides to blow out.

Xmas day, tesco decide they want temporary generator connected, ready for the expected boxing day rush, due to an intermittent supply fault in the area.

Many years ago i was on call over Christmas to support an emergency service's London wide communication system. The call out pager went of at 11:30 Christmas morning, called the service control room to find where the problem was..

" No faults, just wanted to wish the on duty engineer a Merry Xmas and paging was the only way to contact you "
