I must admit when I replied first to the OP I did not realise that it referred to Miller but now I know I think even more she should be sacked.

The effrontery of these people and any supporting her, including Cameron, is beyond belief.

I agree, of course. But who is her one supporter on here, I wonder?

Well she finally did the semi honourable thing and resigned (keeping the dosh)

I was reading a supporting twitter from one of her fellow MP's
Carol MacCleod offering her unwaiving support and claiming she was hounded.

As the OP said in what other "industry" could you overclaim by such an amount "by mistake" and then be asked to only repay a small proportion.

Bearing in mind this is public money, in what way is she different from the scum who knocks over an old lady/man and steals her pension. Resign!!! lucky to escape a custodial sentence.

I'm seriously considering improving my lot by lobbing a brick through a jeweller's window and nicking all I can reach.

If I am caught, I assume that if I apologise in no uncertain terms the matter will be dropped and I'll be allowed to keep the goods.

I regret to inform you that that is only the case if you already have enough money, are friends of the jeweller, have other friends in high place, have influence over the authorities, have a total lack of conscience and shame, have a bare-faced cheek to appear in public regardless, are a member of a minority who can claim persecution, have a limitless supply of obduracy and disrespect for those who voted for you.

Neighbours talking to each other.
Being able to leave your front door unlocked whilst out.
Police being allowed to give yobs a clip round the ear when deserved.
MPs being held in high regard by their constituents.
No win - no fee lawyers never having been heard of.

Was that ever really true? Maybe in small, isolated communities but I grew up in a town in the fifties and my parents would never have gone out without locking the doors.

Back in my young days, there were people around who felt they had the right to 'clip the ear' of any kid they didn't like the looks of. Thankfully, those days are over. Nobody is above the law, least of all the police. Sorry but no deal on that one.

Maybe they were but that doesn't mean that they deserved it. I suspect that there have always been money-grubbing parasites in politics. We just didn't know. As somebody once said, "The only people who can be trusted with political power are those who don't want it."

Sorry; can't agree with that one either. Allowing lawyers to advertise has given ordinary people access to civil law in a way that they never really had before. If ludicrous claims are being made - and some undoubtedly are - then that is the fault of judges.

No, I'm not going to shoot you down - well maybe just a little bit. Capital punishment did have one flaw: you couldn't undo a mistake. Fair enough to abolish it on that score but what happened to the whole-life sentence that was supposed to take its place? "You get thirty years for robbing a train. You get ten for murder now that's insane." (Labi Siffre) Too right! Even ten years is long these days.

In my experience, responsible parents would be very happy for the police or anyone else to give their wayward kid a clout if needed. It was the same at school. If you got the cane you didn't dare tell your parents or you'd get a good hiding when you got home.

I agree that prison sentences should be much longer than what appears to be considered acceptable these days. And a return to Victorian prisons would help too, instead of the holiday camps we have these days.

I think hanging should be brought back too, where guilt is proven beyond any doubt: something that can be much more certain these days.
