Baxi Boiler - Water gets hot then cold then hot.

Okay. Family visit over, bad case of flu, Christmas … all came and went. Finally getting around to looking at this problem.

What I thought was.

Put F3 in the system. Run the system for a couple of days. Drain the system. Refill the system. Run the system for a couple of hours. Drain and refill again. See whether that cleared the problem.

Failing that call someone in because the removal of the heat exchanger, (according to the manual), requires the removal of the gas valve. Looking at the boiler I can believe that.

So.

Drained the system. Refilled the system. Switched the boiler on. Drew hot water.

The boiler temp rose rapidly the water stayed cold.

I feel that there is air in the boiler. I might be wrong. This is probably really simple but I don’t want to kill the boiler messing with it. Anyone got any suggestions for clearing this before I give up and call the man?

Where are you in brum?
That heat exchanger has to come out to be cleaned, with acid such as brick/patio cleaner or spirits of salt
 
Managed to get the Heat Exchange off. Soaked it in a 50% brick acid solution for about 30 mins. Washed it through with a hose pipe jet.

Managed to get it back in place.

Pressured up the system and now testing it.

Fingers crossed.

Obviously testing hot water can take quite a while.

I have to say that I can usually do I in about four minutes. But then I am gas registered so perhaps that enables me to do it quicker?

Okay. That was January, this is June.

The problem is back.

Do I just repeat the clean as before?
Do I buy a new heat exchange plate and replace this one?
Is there an underlying problem causing this that I need to sort out?

What would you more experienced guys do?

Wel its got clogged with dirt/ sludge again so tour system is dirty.clean plate again and flush system

Okay. That is what I did in January, if I do the same thing again, why will I not just be back here in another six months?
 
fit a filter on your heating system to prevent sludge etc entering the boiler. Google Magnaclean to get an idea
 
Cleaning the existing plate or fitting a new one will both solve the problem for six months.

Its your choice of doing much more work to remove and prevent further dirt getting into the boiler or just accepting an hour or two of work cleaning twice a year.

This sounds useful Tony. Could you tell me what "much more work to remove and prevent further dirt getting into the boiler" would consist of?
 
Fitting a Filter as already mentioned. Or get the system powerflushed would be the best solution.
