I've got a product to paint on my garage concrete / asbestos corrugated roof but first I need to get the moss off it. Of course I don't want to scrape it off, I need a product that can be sprayed or poured on to it and the moss dies and can then be washed off clean. I've tried Jeyes fluid but that does virtually nothing. There are many products I see advertised but whether they will kill it completely so it can be washed off ready for painting I don't know.

Basically I don't want to do any scraping. Any ideas anyone?

A friend told me that her dad used to use washing detergent?
Worth a try as I believe all he did was pour it on. Given his probable age I think it may have been powder

I would leave it alone whatever you try to remove moss you are pretty sure to take some asbestos with it, after all the moss is sealing the surface and it's Eco friendly too!(y)

Thanks guys. I'll try the washing detergent first. Perhaps it might be a good idea to just paint over it with the Bostik Flexicryl, and then if that kills it give it more coats over time, trouble is that stuff's expensive. Yes I've seen the moss killers about but they can cost about £20 and they maybe no better than Jeyes Fluid (or washing detergent). I get the impression they are just for small thin patches on patio or drive. If anyone knows that they are excellent for thick build up on roof please enlighten me.

If the roof is pitched spray it with strong moss killer, The moss killer should kill the roots which keep the moss attached to the roof.
The roots and the moss shrivel up and wind ,rain and gravity wash the dead moss down into the gutter.
It does take a bit of time for this process to work, so you have to be patient.
Power washing just makes a mess and can damage the roof.

For the future - Bare copper wire laid across the roof will help keep a roof clear of growth. The products of the copper oxidising and washing down the roof will kill any moss and lichens which appear.

Thanks Lostinthelight. That's a good link, usefull info there, but I'm amazed to see that they just scrape it off. Presumably whilst wearing breathing apparatus.

Vinty - yes, that's exactly what I want, something that kills it right down to the roots, but which product actually does that?

Harry - that's interesting

Wwwebber - thanks. Yes I know there are cheaper ones, it depends how much quantity you buy I suppose. The problem is they all say they kill moss, but to what extent do they kill it? Guess I'll just have to pick one and try it. I'll try whatever bio detergents I've already got first.

Wow that's usefull Nozzle. Thanks very much for that.

Norton wouldn't allow me to look at the link. Strange.

Moss dies back in summer and can easily be hosed off .Or hose down and brush off .
