Hi,

We moved into an oldish house last year and i noticed the radiators are a bit of a mish-mash but i can live with that for now. What i do need to look at are the TRV's as turning them on even to setting 1 makes the rooms unbearably hot. Will this be the TRV heads or the actual valves on the pipes? Is there any way to test/check?

Thanks

Mick

Is every radiator in the property suffering the same issue ? It would be very unlikely ,but possible ,that every TRV is duff. If you remove the sensor head ,you will see a pin in the centre of the valve body ,it should press down ,with a reasonable amount of pressure ,and pop back up when you let go. If it doesn't ,you need to replace it.
If it moves freely ,the sensor head isn't working.

TRV's take time to work, so the lock shield valve on other side of radiator needs setting to give the TRV time to close, specially if the TRV is on the return.

New programmable heads cost around £10 so cheap enough if it is the heads, not personally had heads fail as far as I am aware, had one collar break which may have been due to pin sticking but more likely furniture moving.

You can buy commissioning shut off caps for some TRV heads around £2:50 which should turn TRV into a standard shut off tap, so you can test valve they come with new TRV's to allow removal of radiator.

But as said seems odd that all have failed, so would try setting lock shield valve first.
