Hello,
I am after a bit of advice please...
I have a 3 way switch on the upstairs landing which controls the landing light. I want to remove one of the switches and replace with a blanking plate. The question I have is - do I need to keep any of the wires in the switch connected to enable the other landing light switches to work still?
I have attached a picture of the original connections on the switch.
Many thanks in advance.

I'd like to see the other switch wiring before I offer advice but the basic answer is possibly.
Is it this or the other 2 way switch you wishto remove?

Hi Sunray,
The first picture is the switch that I want to replace with a blanking plate but as requested, I have posted a picture of the other switch on the landing. This one is staying and as you can see is a different set up from the first.

Ow. Quick release terminals. So they do exist

Connect red to yellow to keep things working.

Put blue into a connector block on its own. To stop it shorting

I believe Andy is correct but as Rocky has mentioned it looks like there is a third switch somewhere and your title of 3 way switch seems to indicate that.
Another pic of that will confirm everthing.

There will be a third switch with a three core and earth cable, with the blue and yellow to L1 and L2 and the red to common.

It would be nice just to confirm all is as we suspect, though. Before we give advice.

Yes I believe you and Andy are correct but I've found a selection of combinations of wiring in the last 60 years and I like to make sure before I send someone along the wrong route. I have encountered exactly this layout several times where the red of the T&E is the live feed to a light on a circuit and the black is the SL for a light on a different different, they sometimes get altered like this to overcome a borrowed neutral.

Good Morning. Many thanks for all the advice, we combined the red and yellow and isolated the blue as Andy suggested (before we had seen the other posts). All working as expected now.

To RF Lighting - the switch is a very old Crabtree 6251 (with a Crabtree 6281 cover). They were in the house when we purchased and we are slowyly changing them as we re-decoate each room. The are old and not very attractive...

Many thanks again for all the advice - it's all appreciated.

Glad it's sorted, did you find the 3rd switch.

Now it's resolved ignore the attached sketch
