Is this the right tool?

Thanks Eddie and sxturbo. I have been reading various forums and keep reading "buy #@#@ buy twice". Is there anything cheaper you think suitable? Ideally from wickes, screwfix or b&q which I have within reasonable drive.

Depends on what you want it for, the one you've highlighted above will be fine, if a bit overkill for the task you've mentioned, but it will be suitable for other tasks as mentioned above. I'm afraid there is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to drills/drivers.

One thing to bear in mind if you are drilling into floorboards is to check for cables and pipes underneath!

I helped my ex FIL to screw back down some floor boards many years ago. Trouble was they got a bit mixed up where they belonged. He laid them loosely in place and at the weekend we started screwing them down. On the last board there were 3 screw holes each end of the board, and only 3 screws. So one end got 2 screws in the outer holes and the other end got a single screw in the centre hole. As this one didn't seem to be screwing in he tapped it with a hammer and then it screwed in with ease. 10 minutes later we are having a cup of tea and a fag when we realised we could hear a hissing noise. Turned out the screw had gone through a gas pipe. Oh what fun. LOL

Off topic a bit (as usual) but see how many screws state that 'no pilot hole is necessary'.......not for me it ain't - pilot hole every time if you want the screw to pull down properly.
Old Timer John :)

Oh yes! Especially near board ends where they tend to split the board regardless of thickness.

Personally I wouldn't pay any less for a drill, it may be overkill for this job but it is a very versatile tool so is worth paying bthat bit extra.

I have personally used cheap drills before and tbh they were awful just didn't work well and a massive lack of power, batteries don't last long, wait forever for them to charge etc (and this was a green Bosch DIY cordless)

Another option is https://www.screwfix.com/p/dewalt-d...EALw_wcB#product_additional_details_container

The einhell is good and the brush less motor is good.

But the DeWalt is a more powerful tool and is a brand known for their reliability.

Einhell are a budget brand one of the best budgetabudget and make tools for other brands also good customer service

You don't need 18v for that task B&Q sell dewalt stuff buy a 12v drill which will feel much better in the hand.
John I too pilot hole a lot especially near the end.
Screws (if not pilot holed) not pulling in depend on whether they are full threaded or not.
