I need a 40a supply for a shower rather than fit a dedicated shower consumer unit is it posible to fit a rcbo to this existing unit ?
If so will I have any problems with space and the extra length of a 40a rcbo ?
Or is it better to fit a second dedicated unit for the shower ?
Just a bit tight for space to mount the additional unit

Well, that unit looks full...... if there is an unused MCB in there, it should be replaceable with an RCBO, Hager now do a compact version, but even the older style would fit that unit.

You MAY be able to rearrange the circuits to create a spare way.

We need to know the sizes of all the breakers, and what each one does.

Why is there no RCD protection for any of the existing circuits, particularly as that is a very recent consumer unit?

It has one of these old rcd's before the consumer unit ?
The 16a breaker on the left is not being used so intended to swap that for rcbo.
I cant find a compact 40a I was just concerned about the space in the Unit to accommodate
Wheres the best place to order one from as prices vary quitea bit

That is an old voltage ELCB. These are obsolete as these do not provide any safety features. This needs sorting out as a matter of urgency.
Rather than mess around with adding to your existing consumer unit you need to find a registered electrician and have your electricial installation assessed and updated. A new consumer unit will almost certainly be part of this.

What sort of electrical supply do you have, does it arrive on overhead wires?

No the incoming main is underground.
There is also another old unit for storage heating on a E7 meter.
I know it all needs updating but just need a shower as a matter of urgency so just looking for the best way to add this until everything else gets done

Was thinking If I could get this in the existing unit ?
Alternatively fit a shower unit with rcd but not as easy as space is limited.

You’ll need to see what headroom you have in the CU. You may need a compact RCBO, but cannot see a 40amp one in the Hager catalogue.

In any case, this is a new circuit and notifiable work. So you’ll need a registered electrician to do this work. He/she can sort it for you.

I cant find a compact 40a
Hager do not make a compact 40A RCBO, the larger one is the only option.

All of the other circuits should have RCD protection as well, and should have had it from when that consumer unit was installed.
That large black circuit breaker has been obsolete for 40 years and should have been replaced decades ago. It's entirely useless.
The supply tails look very small, and will almost certainly need to be replaced with larger ones to accommodate the additional load of the shower.
Other questions include why there are 2 sets of tails from the cutout, what size is the main fuse, whether the main bonding and earthing is correct and so on.

Nothing can be added to that until it's been established exactly what is going on there. It's clearly been altered by persons who had no idea what they were doing, did not care, or both.
The shower will have to wait.

Flameport tells a truthful story.

Get someone in to look at it before anything is done.
