I've decided to have the entire house rewired - does that mean skimming would be needed?

I've been deciding whether to go with a full rewire and central heating reinstallation and have decided on a total rewire - Does this mean that where the channels are cut and the old wires ripped out and new ones installed that the entire wall have to be skimmed?

I suppose it depends what finish is acceptable.

You can either do a local repair or full skim.

Could be lucky and the wiring has been run in conduit but if your luck is anything like mine then probably not!.

If the wiring was in conduit wouldn't that mean a raised conduit on the surface of the wall?

Some rewires have a channel or capping over the wiring, then plaster over that.

Others (most?) have a couple of clips and then the wire is plastered in iirc.

I can imagine that the wire that's been plastered in is much more fiddley and causes more damage than one with a channel or capping?

If it's been plastered in you'll have to have chases cut into the walls for new wiring.

So I've got to add the cost of skimming all the walls in the house then. When you skim do you have to take skirting boards off and door jams?

Not necessarily sometimes cables are in buried conduits, but in my limited experience not often.

A pre-1950's house might have conduits down the walls, but they sometimes might not be adequate size, even if they are, they may not be in the ideal locations.
