Loud noise from 3 port valve

2. Central heating only works when HW is also on from controller. This does not mean HW is called by cylinder, just on from controller. My understanding is that when central heating and hot water are both on from controller, hot water cylinder thermostats decides if there is need for hot water or not, and if there is no need for hot water, then it sends signal to value to move to central heating only. I am looking for wiring diagram to allow for this function. All this will not happen if hot water is off from controller. This is how system was working previously.
Thats correct re the cylinder stat not calling as it then switches 230V to the grey wire via the stat satisfied contact (2) which motors the valve to CH only, (port A) BUT/AND if HW is not selected ON then the HW OFF contact supplies this 230V to the grey wire, in other words the cyl stat SAT contacts and the programmer HW OFF contacts are wired in parallel, its possible that there is no wiring from the (programmer) HW OFF contacts wired to the terminal box or the programmer has a defective HW OFF contact. Still doesn't account for the noisy operation of course, you could remove the actuator, set the programmer etc to whatever causes the noise, open the valve manually to the corresponding position and see if still noisy.

I have had exactly that fault and it was a tooth on the synchron motor that was sheared off, either that or the synchron motor is not fitted properly and is jumping the gear mechanism

Thank you everyone. Engineer visited in the morning and he has replaced the head of the valve. Working fine now, no noise and all combinations working as expected. Will keep a check for next few days.

Glad its OK now, you said you had the valve replaced recently (post #1) but it only lasted 3 weeks, was the whole valve replaced or just the valve head like just now?.

Hi John, 3 weeks it was a whole new value with new head. Now only the head was replaced. No draining the system was needed and it was quick.

Not a great recommendation for Honeywell, hope its replaced under warranty.

It might be well worth carrying out the below mod, it only requires a relay and a bit of wiring but may need the installation of a non return valve on the cylinder coil inlet to prevent gravity circulation. The valve is only powered while CH is requested, some just programme the HW to come on for a few minutes last at night but that is only effective if the cylinderstat is also calling so the valve may be powerd up to CH overnight for hours.
