I smelt the smell of smoke, when I opened the windows, on going to bed on Wednesday - located on the North / West Yorks border. Leeds Uni has just confirmed the smoke did make it this far west, from the big wildfire, near Whitby.

I’ve just returned from three nights in Goathland.....a few miles NW from the fire.
One hell of a scene but thankfully for us the smoke was heading out to sea, eventually veering north towards Whitby.
Brilliant work from the local community who have worked constantly to contain the blaze.

During the big fires in Victoria (Aus) in 1983 on Ash Wednesday I was attending a training course at Shell in Sydney, it was around 100f, when we emerged from the air con in the afternoon the temp had dropped by 30+ degrees due to a southerly wind, the sky had turned to a brown/orange colour and the smell of woodsmoke was evident, the fires were around 800 km away
