New slate choice for old slate roof

here cost is a big factor and artificial slate attractive, and the life of artificial slate replaced and fitted has been consistent with the projected time periods of 50 years or so
Two quite large office blocks near me have just been re-roofed after using those cheap man-made wafers, they were only built about 20 yrs ago
I estimate about 250k each

Thanks for all the good information gents! I've ditched the idea of man made fibre cement.

Why, what’s wrong with it?
Nails /lats failing & tiles dropping, I've had to repair minor leeks in the roof/ridge every year for the past 3 and every guy that repairs it says it all needs replacing, also a badly fitted verge(?) between mine and the neighbours roof on the rear (which incidentally is a mess of concrete tile badly done by the builder who lived there, so really all needs doing).

Looking at re-using what I've already got makes good economic sense but -
I won't know what's good until it's off so won't know an amount to order new, leaving the roof exposed and roofers waiting while they arrive. How did this work for anyone who's done this? + the slates are 117 years old already, will there be many worth keeping?

Checking out the slate options mentioned above, they look great options.

Any opinions on the Brazilian slates? 100yr guarantee, BS EN 12326-1 standard, £1.62ea inc for my size.

I've attached a pic, taken from a velux, so you can see what I'm dealing with, it's from last week pre the latest repair.

Thanks!

Several years ago we had the Welsh slate removed and then replaced with Spanish slate. We were well happy with the outcome.

They don't charge more if you put more pictures of your roof you know! From the picture I can see, they look ok.

its a Welsh slate and are reusable.
you'll need reclamation to match in , or just do front in one and another slate at the back , New Welsh is out the question, then go for a Glendyne Canadian or a good Spanish ,we had the dubious pleasure of using most available international slates I've only mention slate i would put on my own house.
Those that pooh hoo Slate from Spain should take a look around northern France, Germany etc they mostly use Spanish.

So I've been looking at various roofs for the last week & noticed quite a few "eternit" style relatively new roofs, c8/10 years old, with definite signs of moss growth, the little balls between & at the bottom of slates! So sold on the real slates as the best option.

So what's the issue with Brazilian slates same as Chinese?

Spanish look the best option, re-using what I've got on one side then new on the rear. Just need to find an good, understanding no bs roofer at a reasonable price

Haha - I know, they're the pics I got before I came to this forum so don't have any to show for opinion gathering. I will get more then return when I'm closer to pulling the trigger on the job.

Thank's all for the help and advice (y)(y)

The best choice would be a natural slate out of the ground. Delabole slate is the best but its expensive. Welsh slate is slightly more cost effective but not as good. I think the best man made slate is Brazillian.
