France and Italy criticised Israel for blocking a senior Catholic clergyman from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Palm Sunday, cutting off access to one of Christianity’s holiest sites a week before Easter.

Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem who had been considered a contender to succeed Pope Francis, was prevented from entering the fourth-century church, built over a site where Christ is said to have been crucified, the Patriarchate said."
