Because there is no gravel boards the base of our fence is a lot worse for wear. The wooden posts and Arris Rails are in good nick, i stain the fence every 3yrs. My plan is to replace the feather edge with new but also install concrete gravel boards, this should give us a fairly robust fence for a few more years ( we are both pensioners) My question, when i install new feather edge can i use any type of nails or is there one just for this type of fencing?? Cheers guys.

As Foxhole mentioned, annular ring shank are good. Just make sure they are galvanised and good quality. If it is a well treated fence or timber that has a long guarantee, it will be expensive but I would suggest going stainless steel. 1. You will 100% not get any rust marks down the fence. 2. They will not be rusting at all and potentially having to be replaced. If you are not overly worried about looks galvanised nails will still get you a good 20 odd years minimum.

Google - annular ring shank stainless steel nails for fencing. There are a few good results.
