'Silver Machine' by hairy degenerates Hawkwind, 1972. One of the heaviest records to grace the Top 10. This is an odd film clip, totally out of sync with the music, but it's the only footage I've seen of the Lemmy-era Hawkwind and so is quite precious. The dancer is Stacia, who sometimes performed NAKED. The fantastic drummer is Simon King, who had been in the group Opal Butterfly with Lemmy in the 60s. Hawkwind had an ever-changing line-up, always centred around the founder Dave Brock. Lemmy lasted until 1975, was sacked and then formed Motorhead.
Moving sideways through time this is the 1977 version of Hawkwind, with 'Quark, Strangeness and Charm', about Albert Einstein and his yellow moustache. The singer here is Robert Calvert, the writer of 'Silver Machine'. The clip is from Marc Bolan's TV show. Hawkwind's ever-present Dave Brock is not present here... the story is that he and Bolan didn't get on, and so he didn't turn up. Grainy footage sadly, but as far as I know it is the only footage of Calvert with Hawkwind...
