Curved Air 'Back Street Luv', their only hit. Curved Air was one of those early 70s groups that did long pieces featuring tedious guitar and keyboard noodling. However, singer Sonja Kristina was great, and some of their shorter songs, such as this one, stood out...

'Silver Machine' by hairy degenerates Hawkwind, 1972. One of the heaviest records to grace the Top 10. This is an odd film clip, totally out of sync with the music, but it's the only footage I've seen of the Lemmy-era Hawkwind and so is quite precious. The dancer is Stacia, who sometimes performed NAKED. The fantastic drummer is Simon King, who had been in the group Opal Butterfly with Lemmy in the 60s. Hawkwind had an ever-changing line-up, always centred around the founder Dave Brock. Lemmy lasted until 1975, was sacked and then formed Motorhead.

Moving sideways through time this is the 1977 version of Hawkwind, with 'Quark, Strangeness and Charm', about Albert Einstein and his yellow moustache. The singer here is Robert Calvert, the writer of 'Silver Machine'. The clip is from Marc Bolan's TV show. Hawkwind's ever-present Dave Brock is not present here... the story is that he and Bolan didn't get on, and so he didn't turn up. Grainy footage sadly, but as far as I know it is the only footage of Calvert with Hawkwind...

 
Whatever happened to this guy, one hit wonder, played throughout the world never to be heard of again?

 
Last one from Hawkwind: "Moonglum" from 1985. A different front man yet again, this time it is Huw Lloyd-Langton, who was also a brilliant and very distinctive guitarist. Hawkwind had a good 80s; they were popular with all the contemporary "subcultures" such as the goths, the punks and the heavy metallers.

 
From the world of British light entertainment this is the Joe Loss Orchestra doing 'If I Had A Hammer'. The crazy front man is Ross McManus, father of Elvis Costello...
