Treadmill tripping electrics

There is no positive and negative on 240 volt AC mains. You mean live and neutral I presume. Disconnect the yellow wire, it's a push on terminal. Measure again. If still short circuit check the switch and reset button.

You mean Line and Neutral = both of which are Live - just for clarity of correct terms.

considering you are answering a 12 year old post - maybe Live & Neutral was the mores of the day?

up to 1970s = Live and Neutral
1980s ---> 2007 =Phase and Neutral (i have never heard it called that)
2007 ---> Now = Line and Neutral

so what will be next ?
2030s ????? and neutral

Energised & Neutral, how about that

terminals on plugs and installations could be marked E N & E

@winston1 is long gone, he was I think main reason @ban-all-sheds left, the post which reerected this thread has been it seems removed, I think the Line was selected as so much had L and N written on it, the classing of neutral as being live, does seem to go well back, it seems to be related to Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations, and we can only switch the neutral with a linked device which also switches the line.

The definition for a line conductor changed in 2008, as it is highlighted in my copy, likely done when I took the exam, so not caught out with the change.

What I have never worked out, is with a yellow plug, which are used in the main for a reduced low voltage supply i.e. 55-0-55 or 63-0-63 if three-phase, why is any pin marked N? Also with yellow Arctic flex, why is any core blue? As we don't have a neutral with a reduced low voltage supply, so we should not have anything marked 0, N, or coloured blue.

I think the reason for the blue is it can’t t be assumed it will be RLV . Could be 110-0.

I would say, a 0-110 supply is rare, they are found with control circuits and imports from USA, but may be 2% 0-110 v 98% 55-0-55 so marked L1 and L2 and cable cores brown, black, green/yellow with a yellow outer would make more sense.
