Hi,

I was recently given a treadmill by an inlaw (dislocated my knee 6 month ago and can't run on the streets).

I've put it in my garage which has an old style breaker box which has HRC fuses 16amp for the ring and 6amp for the lights.

Says he moved the treadmill a few years ago and hasn't worked since. Power socket and switch were loose on it so that's where I started.

2 of the connectors had come away from the terminal so I connected them and tried it. Popped the breaker as soon as I press the switch.

I understand very little about circuits and earth leakage etc. I've tried switching the wires that were connected and it popped the HRC fuses for the ring as soon as I flipped the switch.

I've uploaded some images of the switch the wires available and the main board and motor.

I've read that carbon build up on the motor could cause an issue but the motor looks clean also the brushes have more than enough on them.

I've also tried plugging in the power cord into a surge protected extension with no joy. Just popped it again.

Any tips to fault find would be greatly appreciated.

Although you say the brushes look ok can we have a look at them? What do the insides of the brush boxes look like?
If you shine a light down the box does the commutator look shiny or a very dark brown/black? Does the brushes move freely in and out of the box or do you need to push and pull them?

What do you mean in terms of rating? I'm a novice. I know it's 240v. There is a sticker on the side I'll take a picture and upload it tomorrow. I'll also do the same with the brushes as I didn't check in the space.

The box blows as soon as the switch is flipped I imagine the motor doesn't kick in until the unit is turned on at the panel.

How and what was connected to where?
If it's blowing a fuse instantly when switched on, it's likely been wired incorrectly.

I've tried switching the wires that were connected
That is not safe or a suitable method of determining how it should be connected.

I've attached a photo of the label on the bottom of the treadmill. I've also too a look at the brushes they are clean inside no dust and they spring out with a decent force as expected.

I've also uploaded a photo of the switch when it was initially inspected with the two wires missing it seems to be the earth and neutral that are disconnected.

Could the treadmill be overloading the breaker? The garage also has a TV and chest freezer running. All through a 16amp HRC fuse.

Could the treadmill be overloading the breaker?
No. It's 800 watts or about 3 amps - and that would be with the motor actually running.

Fuses blowing instantly on switch on is a short circuit.
The input socket is missing the N and E wires.

One of the connections on the switch is a neutral so that the indicator lamp will work. If that is connected incorrectly, it will short out the supply as soon as it's switched on.

The various white wires need to be identified, as do the terminals on that switch.

Is there a way to identify the wires and terminals. As I've just realised there is a phone number I may call it and see if they can guide me through the switch wiring.

You need some test gear to work out which terminal is which.

Do the white wires have any distinguishing marks printed on them such as numbers or lettering? Are there any other terminals out of sight?
Can we see a picture of the front of that switch arrangement?

I may not have explained properly above or may not be obvious but there are 3 wires down the frame that go from control panel on top past the switch and towards the motherboard and Motor. Also has an incline motor underneath.
One wire splits as it comes down the frame this consists of a blue and grey wire. The blue travels straight to the board as pictured and the grey is involved in the switch.
There is then a white wire coming from the board which is then split to a short 2nd wire both white wires are intended for the switch.
The white wires do have writing on my eyesight I think they say CIXT LANG XUN WIRE.
The final wire coming up is the earth wire.
I've attached some photos if any others are required just say so.

I appreciate any help or advice that's being suggested so thanks everyone.
