Motor won't start on its own unless you manually twiddle it to get it going. Everything works fine until it reverses direction, then it won't start again unless you twiddle the motor shaft. Disconnecting the drum drive band makes no difference: you still have to twiddle the motor shaft to get the motor running. Motor shaft spins freely, so it isn't jammed.
Question: Do I need a whole new motor, or is it just the motor condenser which has failed? Is it the condenser which "kicks the motor into life"?

Hmmmmm... Thanks for that. Now I'm faced with the dilemma of whether it's worth shelling out 30-40 odd quid for a capacitor (as quoted on various spares websites) plus an hour of my valuable time, only to find that something else goes wrong,...or... by a new machine for £150 with a 2 year warranty.

Why is it that these things go wrong just before Christmas? Last year it was out vaccuum cleaner.

Try Maplin. If you know the size of the capacitor they can match them sometimes. Usually for less than a tenner.

Excellent. Local Maplin has exact match - even to the bolt on the end that fixes it to the motor - for £3.96. I'll pick one up tomorrow, and all things being equal, be up and running for Christmas.

Why do I need it for Christmas? Because me and my offspring are doing a "Boxing Day Sea Walk" which requires swimming as far as you can off the beach, in fancy dress, to raise money for charity, and lots of towels and thermals will require drying.
