    Floor levelling 5cm drop

Well if i was to pour screed into the deepest corner, it would become progressively thinner up the slope if that makes sense? I'm wondering if screed is the right option now, as even at its deepest it'll only be 5cm and in one corner. I've attached an image to give an idea - wonder if it's best...

    Floor levelling 5cm drop

I've taken the lino off now. Having remeasured it one corner has a drop of about 8cm, so I'm wondering if I should mix up a screed to level this up, then cover it with FLC before tiling it. My only concern is that the screed would be quite thin towards the up slope. Any thoughts?

    Floor levelling 5cm drop

It's 2.4 x 3.6m, and it slopes from one side to another. I've just removed the top layer of lino and there is another one underneath which is almost impossible to remove because of the glue! Does this definitely need to be removed?

    Floor levelling 5cm drop

Hi, i have a conservatory that i want to tile. The base is concrete. There is a drop of 5cm over about 2.4 metres. I see you can get floor leveling compound up to 50mm - does this have to be done in layers or one go?

    Replacing blown plaster near window

I have put a request out to replaster my bathroom in particular to replace old blown plaster and scratch coat round the window which has over the years attracted water ingress from leaky window seals etc. One plasterer has suggested using bonding directly onto the brick. Would this be correct...

Does the boiler not try and source new water from the mains when the hot water programme comes on?

Will turning off water bream my boiler?

The leak is on the stopcock itself. Keep meaning to fix it but it's pretty minor, I'd just prefer to turn it off when I'm away as it stops dripping when it's off.

Will turning off water bream my boiler?

I've left my house for a couple of days, and turned off the mains because of a small leak, and want to know if I should get someone to go to my house to turn the boiler off fully, as I forgot to turn the boiler off, so it is due to heat up water this evening for an hour and again tomorrow...

    Hacking off plaster

Hello, I need to hack off a load of failed plaster back to the brick along the whole outside wall where the bay windows are (which has blown due to previous damp), and probably some on the adjoining walls although i dont want to hack off all the plaster on the inside wall as most of it is...

How many rads off 15mm pipe?

I have an oil fired boiler and cylinder system, and all the upstairs rads run off 15mm branch from the boiler. There were 4 rads and I've just added another small one in a bedroom which didn't have one. Took a bit of balancing but they're all still getting to a good temperature, however I've...

    Adding new radiator

I've added it now, although it took a fair amount of balancing and the 3 rads after it were stone cold. All the return valves are open 1/4 turn and all rads are hot. The one thing I notice is that the return pipework is virtually as hot as the flow. Shouldn't it be colder?

    Adding new radiator

When you say balance the system what do you mean?

    Adding new radiator

I'm looking at adding a new Radiator to a bedroom which currently doesn't have one. All the Pipework upstairs is 15mm. Does this matter? I read somewhere that adding new rads to 15mm circuit can cause problems because of the flow rates. There are currently only 6 rads in the whole house. The 2...

    Old plaster blown

I have a patch of blown plaster (in a bathroom I'm renovating) over what looks like a cement based scratch coat (which feels pretty solid). Should I remove the remaining blown plaster and patch this up with new lime undercoat? Ill be tiling over this as it's right next to the bath. This is a...

    Skimming over previously wallpapered walls

Hi, I need to reskim some bedroom walls which i've already removed all the wallpaper off. The walls are now back to the original bare plaster which is in decent condition however i feel it needs a reskim to for a decent finish. Do i need to PVA the walls first, or can just skim straight onto...

    Lintel failure?

Hi, Just looking at a property where the brickwork above the bay window appears to be bowing downwards. I suspect this is because the lintel has failed or there is in fact no lintel. Any ideas? See image.

Plaster falling off corners from damp

It's been empty for about 9 months, having gone to intestacy following the death of its owner who was elderly (so i'd be surprised it has any recent surveys, but that would be for the solicitor to find out). It's detached, and under the carpet is parquet flooring which isnt damp or damaged, it...

Plaster falling off corners from damp

That's just where the fallen plaster is leaning on the skirting. There's nothing untoward about the skirting. The walls are quite thick, perhaps 30cm

Plaster falling off corners from damp

It's in Norfolk, although i'm not sure about the age - probably late victorian although the original building may well be earlier. I've attached a few more images. On the outside there is cobble up to the same point where the brick comes up to on the inside. As you can see, there is no...
