Hi all,
I realise this may have been asked before, I have read a few thread, but couldn't find anything to answer my questions.
We recently bought a house (built ~ 1850) Faces East/West, mid terrace. Went in the attic last Wednesday and the inside of the felt on the west side only was...
Hello, recently bought a tv mount. Measured out the holes levelled everything up but coming to my second hole. As I got past the plaster and to the brick my drill started to ‘wander’ causing my mount to be misaligned. I’ve relocated this mount twice now to try get this right. I have used a...
It would be far far easier to simply remove the bottom few courses, the house will stay watertight as the felt will see to that, if not tack a strip of felt onto the rafters.
I assume that you are refitting in timber in which case paint it up first and then you'll have only a few holes to fill...
Where is the leak coming in? Have you got holes in the felt?
Have a good look at all the tiles, especially where the interlocking bits are as they break very easily.
Be aware that in some houses the soffit is behind a course of bricks and this might force rods over the felt, mine was mix of stuffing cable up the hole and fishing or rods
Has someone just bodged the hole up with a felt triangle and timber laths in the past?
For sure, the gutter end that we can see there is up to no good!
John :)
Tiles often let water in and if there is any holes/damage to the felt its going to show inside as yours is doing. If it were a slate roof it probably would not be leaking.
Holes infelt is a minor problem, they can be patched if they worry you.
If your roof is generally in ok condition and weatherproof then why replace?
If it aint broke don't fix it!
I have just replaced felt on a roof and extended a dormer, BC have suggested using a dry ridge system to allow ventilation with the existing eaves vents. I purchased a dry ridge system and planning to fit this weekend.
What i am concerned about is all my existing ridge tiles have x2 holes in...
When Veluxs are fitted it's necessary to cut a holein the roofing felt. As bad as the Velux fitting instructions are (!) they do show that a 'nappy' should then be made which seals the holein the felt with the edge of the window. This maintains the secondary protection of the felt.
I...
About a 10cm squared holeinfelt. It seems a tile has moved and a bird got in. Insulation will also need replacing in that area. A small area of felt has also come down in another area, no leaks though. Insurance company quoted £450 if claim is processed. Sloping roof and end terrace. Thanks
Yes it is doable. The pain comes if you have felt/membrane under the slates- getting the weathering right on that from the inside can be tricky so be very careful where you cut.
If no felt then it's still a fiddle but gets a lot easier once you can get your shoulders through the hole :)
it wont leak as shed felt is designed to work with clout nails which will seal teh hole, especially once it has warmed up. We normally use marley garage grade felt which is about £5 more a roll but lasts a lot longer and is easier to work with as it doesnt tear so easily.
it is not unusual when peeking through the felt lap to see a chink of light.
it is unusual however to be "looking up" when observing such light.
felt is lapped in such a way as to allow water to run off and not in, therefore you should only be able to see through the laps by looking down...
Should I fix just the roof, or both roof and felt though.
Roofer #1 inspected the attic and advised fixing the torn felt. Roofer #2 advised that the houses in my estate all have degrading felt which will have multiple holes so fixing the felt is a waste of money, he didn't go into the attic to...
The felt seal has a gap, some holes in the brick face, parapet and a shot showing that neighbours also had repointing done. They don't seem to have bowing walls
Cheers! To be honest I've not really felt a breeze coming down or going up the chimney - but it must have an impact on the room, as it's a ruddy great hole to the open sky.
There are grills at each end for ventilation. Another question I have please. Through the larger holes in the felt I can daylight. Does this indicate a problem with the roof tiles.?
