Is this CU still alright, usable?

OK, thanks, guys. I'll ask that he use the current CU but he did say "In order for me to sign off the cooker circuit you’ll neee to upgrade the consumer unit. " so I may not be able to persuade him! Just his personal (and not unreasonable) opinion on it, I guess.

Is this CU still alright, usable?

Can the wiring be on the surface?

Is this CU still alright, usable?

Yea, there's a spare 15A and 30A on the right. The ones in use are 40A, 30A and 5A (shower, ring and lights) The wiring will prob be surface mounted; the CU is inside the cupboard next to the oven, about 60cm away.

Is this CU still alright, usable?

I need a new circuit for an oven (there wasn't one there before) and an electrician has said that he can't work with my CU as it's too old. Is this really the case? It has space for one more breaker. I know it "could be updated", but if it's safe and functional then I'd rather keep it. Will...

Wood stove spigot 115mm, not standard?

I have a stove, actually a sauna stove but basically like any other woodburner, and the spigot is 115mm OD. That's by my measurement, but it is also described as 115mm in the manual (i.e. not in inches). There do not seem to be stove pipes available of that size - will I need to go up/down to...

Low pressure from shower head, solutions?

I let out a house and the shower runs from a mixer, with hot water coming from a tank. The hot water tank is at floor level upstairs, the shower is also upstairs, and the header tank is in the attic immediately above them both - so the usual arrangement, I think. Pressure from the shower is...

Plastering over artex, is this the expected finish?

I had some plastering done as part of a larger job, and it went over an artex ceiling. This is the finish I've found today after completion - almost the entire ceiling has the pattern still visible on it and in much of it I can feel the ridges if I touch it. The pictures are pretty bad from my...

Erecting stud wall under existing RSJ

Great, that suits me. Thanks. I guess I need to put the header plate up first and wedge it on tight while the adhesive dries, then build the rest of the stud underneath it?

Erecting stud wall under existing RSJ

I want to put up a stud wall in an opening 3.3m W * 2.1m H, to re-establish a division which has previously been knocked through (quite a while ago, not sure when). I'm told that the ceiling in that opening is an RSJ, as we might expect, and it clearly has plasterboard over it. Will there...

Decking over OSB - how to protect it?

I have a shed base (framed in 100x50 stuff) decked in 19mm OSB. The shed itself doesn't cover the whole base - there's a strip about 400mm deep along the front (and the full 2400mm width of the shed) which is uncovered by the building (but overhung by the roof) left as a kind of porch or step...

Sauna door frame and such, will the wood cope?

Hello. I'm building a sauna (outside) and it will be clad internally with some kind of specialised sauna cladding that will cope with the heat. The internal face of the door can be clad similarly. But: the door jambs, stops, and the "edges"/sides of the door itself (it will be quite thick in...

Builders busy until May - to be expected at the moment?

I'm sure this is a hard question to answer, and depends on the area and lots of other things, but basically I have some builders whose quote I like and whom I've met and feel comfortable with, and I'd like them to do an extension for me - but they're not free until late May. I would much rather...

    non-modern lighting wiring in attic

First time I've used them! In my own house I looped in at the ceiling roses but I now see what a damn pain that actually is.

    non-modern lighting wiring in attic

hah, very interesting photos here! Thanks for all the comments. What I did in the end was a rather over-engineered solution, and unnecessary considering that all the cables came to a central point. But, it gives my friend confidence regarding the layout and it didn't really take much longer...

    non-modern lighting wiring in attic

hmm, yes I suppose I could do that - I know where things first come up from downstairs so I could put an extra junction box in there. The lid fits on but has a crack/piece missing, that's the damage - might be worth taking the opportunity to change it over. I'll have a look next time I'm round...

    non-modern lighting wiring in attic

Ah, I see - so basically just a box like that and my own separate connector strips do all the joins - got you. I'll see if I can come up with a layout for it and understand the actual wiring!

    non-modern lighting wiring in attic

thanks - do you recommend a particular type of JB that would suit? I've only used small ones like that for a spur once. I would also need space to pull out another light from the whole thing.

    non-modern lighting wiring in attic

What do you make of this? This is for the upstairs lighting in my friend's new house, not the wiring layout I was hoping to see: The junction box is slightly damaged as well as being filthy. Do you propose that this calls for proper rewire and reorganisation, rather than just changing the...

    Ply shed cladding immediately suffering

I'm still a bit confused by the different types - any very specific named/linked examples? There are oil-based and solvent-based, relevant difference? And are we talking about paint-paint or the kind of thing we might slap onto a fence (which in my experience soaks in completely and doesn't...

    Ply shed cladding immediately suffering

No, I can't honestly claim that they did - I got the advice elsewhere (and have seen it done, tbh) OK - worth a try, and I can see if it hasn't fallen apart by next spring. Can you suggest a specific product example you're thinking of so I can see the kind of thing you mean? There are so many...
