    roof verge

I noticed that there is a vertical hairline crack in the mortar of the roof verge, near the top (near where the ridge tiles are). Other than that, the verge looks fine. It happens that our neighbour's roof verge also has one. Is this quite common? I just wonder if I need to do anything about...

    roof valley

Back in Jan. 2014, following the long stormy weather, I noticed that the felt along the 2 valleys (felt on the edge of the valley rafter) in the loft is wet. Our neighbour recommended a roofer who had a look and said the rain got in via the cracks in mortar (he said the cracks are inevitable due...

    fiberglass compound?

I had a leak valley following the bad weather (wet felt along the valley beams in the loft). I found a roofer with very good online reviews and he first said the felt is gone because even if water passes through tiles/valley you shouldn't see wet felt from inside. He said there is a small chance...

    leaking roof repair

thanks, alastairreid. The valley is fiberglass I was told and the roofer reckoned that the some of cement connecting tiles to the valley loose, thus leaving a gap letting water in. it looks like this one.

    leaking roof repair

Have found that felt near the two roof valleys are wet. Got two roofers around and both said some of the cement between the tiles and valley are loose. one suggested to replace the whole fiber glass with lead, and the other suggested just fixing the loose cement. I have decided to go for the...

    leaking roof valley?

Following the heavy rain recently when I got into the loft I found that some felts along the edges of 2 wood planks are wet. From the positions, I suspect there may be leaks in the roof valley where two slopes meet and there are no tiles (it is lead I suppose?). But I am not 100% sure. Can...

    bird on roof?

For some time in my upstairs bedroom I can hear bird-like noises (cooing) in the morning. But I can't see any bird nest from outside. There is nothing in the loft either. In the attached picture, the bedroom in question is on the right upstairs. Any suggestions? Did I miss anything, where...

    flying ants

I live in Bristol. Recently we have some ants with wings (10s of them) in my conservatory usually in the afternoon (4 or 5pm-ish). I am a bit worried could it termites? Although there is info on the web regarding the differences between flying ants and termites, it is still quite confusing...

    cold weather and frozen pipe

Hi I am currently on holiday abroad. Unfortunately I shut down the central heating before I left. Now we have the coldest March on record, I just checked the lowest temperature of my home area is around -1 or -2C (for 2 or 3 hours during the night). I wonder if this is cold enough to lead to...

    frozen gutter

Following the recent snow, I found that the gutter of the lower roof (above the integrated garage and protruded lounge) is full of solid ice. Even the edge of the tiles is icy. There is a small icicle at the end of the gutter. I guess this is probably because some snow higher up (near the 1st...

    meter box

Happy new year everyone. I have a quick question. My house was built in 1992 and the meter boxes are on the outside wall. I just noticed my electricity meter box has 2 pipes (of cables) coming from the ground, through the bottom of the box and connecting to the meter, while other houses in...

    gutter cleaning

How often should I have my gutter cleaned? I have lived here for 6 years and have not done it. Nor have I seen anyone in the neighbourhood do it. The houses here are all built around 1993 with UPVC gutters. Without access to the roof, how do I know if a gutter is blocked or not? I can see...

    crack in mortar joint

hello On the outside wall next to the electric meter box, I just found a small vertical crack in the mortar joint between two bricks. It is hairline wide and about 6.5 cm long (ie. just a single layer of brick long). I wonder if I need to do anything about it or just leave it? What kind...

    tile granule in gutter

Hi My house is a detached built in 1993. While I clean the gutter, there are always some granules (brown sand-like stuff). I think they are washed down from the roof tiles (double Roman tiles maybe?) by the rain. The slope of the gutter is not so good hence there is always some standing water...

    toilet flush

hello I had a new toilet (with push button flush) fitted 2 years ago in my upstairs on-suite bedroom. Recently something very strange happened. Sometimes suddenly I can hear the noise of water filling up the toilet cistern without anyone flushing. Later I found out after flushing the...
