    Dimmer switch live! :(

I'm not talking about my problem above. I'm going to get an expert in. I was discussing the best way to double check the power is off before doing something like replacing a light fitting or switch myself.

Fair enough I didn't know that. I will investigate. Anyone got a guide on how to use one?

    Dimmer switch live! :(

Ah ok that makes sense. I basically have it so that I can double check the power's off on things before I touch it.

    Dimmer switch live! :(

Surely it's a good test to see if something has current running through it though?

    Dimmer switch live! :(

That could be problematic as he's away at the moment. Will get my neighbour in to take a look. The folks who did the work in my house have been nothing but trouble. :(

    Dimmer switch live! :(

I went to switch off the dining room light at the brass dimmer switch last night and noticed a slight tingling in my fingers. I went and got my electrician's screwdriver and found that when the light is on the switch is live. The wiring look ok inside (i'm no expert but I'd assume it was as it's...

    Cracking grout

I feared as much... how about laying some vinyl over the tiles? I have an off-cut big enough. Or would that cause problems too?

    Cracking grout

Hi everyone - once again I ply this forum with my never-ending questions!! 8) It seems that the floor tiles in our bathroom have been laid directly onto the floorboards which are very slightly spongy around the middle of the room. This was done before we bought the place. Lately the grout...

Neighbour's pressure washer causing our lights to pulse

We live in a semi-urban area. Long road of semis. The kettle does pulse the lights a little. He's had the washer for longer than we've been in the house, but I'm not aware of it being an issue. Then again, he usually only uses it in broad daylight so we don't have the lights on at the same time...

Neighbour's pressure washer causing our lights to pulse

The other day I noticed that all our lights were pulsing, like they do when you switch on the kettle or some such device. It was quite annoying actually so I did some research to find out what was causing it. Eventually I worked out that the pulses were in time with the pump of next door's...

    Slug problem

Laying a copper strip all the way around the plants can act as a barrier to slugs and snails.

Anyone grown any massive veg ?

I've got the opposite. Nowt! Nothing at all. Actually not entirely true - had 3 sweetcorn cobs and a couple of shallots, but everything else has failed to fruit completely. Worst offender being the Butternut squashes that haven't even had the decency to send out flowers it's been that cold and...

    New turf issues

Another common issue with lawns is mowing them too short. It depends a bit on the type of grass you have down, but I've found with mine it's better to mow it slightly longer and more regularly.

Consequences of not submiiting to building control?

I didn't know that. Thanks. I guess that all that needs notifying then is the electrical work?

Consequences of not submiiting to building control?

If I were to erect a brick built outbuilding in my garden (within the bounds of planning permission exemption) for the purpose of using as a garden office/guest sleeping area, what would the consequences be of not submitting to building control? I'm not planning on doing this, but a couple of...
