Breakfast Bar LED Strip fed from socket

Hi, I'd like to put 12v LED strip lights along the plinth of my breakfast bar. I have a spare 240v socket in one of the cupboards that I could plug the LED transformer to and hide an Inline switch on the 12v side inside a cupboard to switch them on/off. Is that acceptable from a regulations...

Danish Oil then Hard Wax a worktop

I've ordered some 40mm thick Oak Worktops and the supplier recommended 2 coats of Danish Oil on every surface before fitting and 2 coats on visible surfaces after fitting. I'm OK with that working on the basis that the more coats the better as more will sink into the wood. My Son has the same...

    Stove Register Plate

Thanks for that video. So he uses 2 rope seals, 1 either side of the register plate with the lower one tight against the stove pipe and siliconed to the underside of the register plate. That'll do it, thanks :)

    Stove Register Plate

I am fitting a wood burning stove into an existing fireplace. The chimney has been swept and smoke bombed and confirmed I don't need a liner. Building Control have been out and confirmed they will sign off the stove as part of my kitchen extension. I have bolted angle iron brackets inside the...

Dishwasher & Washing Machine into 1 Standpipe

Great stuff, thanks for explaining how you did it. Is there any advantage of your method vs the V33M if both appliances are discharging at the same time?

Dishwasher & Washing Machine into 1 Standpipe

Hi, my washing machine and dishwasher wastes use the a single standpipe & trap and the waste pipes from the 2 appliances were just stuffed into the top of the standpipe. As I'm going to be fitting a new kitchen I thought I'd do it properly. I'd still like them to share the same standpipe & trap...

    New Consumer Unit ?

My house was rewired about 10 years ago by an Electrical firm and I was given a Certificate that the job was completed to standards. He fitted an 8 way single RCD Consumer Unit with a plastic casing. I am in the process of building an extension onto the kitchen and have completed the 1st fix...

    Render inside Fireplace ?

Yes I'm thinking along those lines too. I assume I'd have to put a couple of Props & Strongboys above the arch to carry the weight while I knock bricks out for the oak beam ? A friend suggested "notching" the oak beam so it looks like it is solid but in reality it is just bolted to the front...

thanks, did you paint the render or add colour to the mix ?

    Render inside Fireplace ?

Took more plaster off to reveal the original arch which I assume is doing the job of a lintel ? Is it safe to remove the infill bricks and rely on the arch to support the weight or does it need a lintel ? Its a pity the arch bricks aren't proud of the chimney breast otherwise I could have...

    Render inside Fireplace ?

Hi, I am going to open up this fireplace along the original brick line and put a wood stove in. There will be about 12" gap at the sides of the stove and perhaps 6" at the back to the chimney breast. My first thought was to have decorative brickwork on the sides of the opening but now I'm...

    Dot n Dab Continuous Bead

I'm confused, I'd like to know if & where or what the Building Regs are applying a continuous bead of Dot n Dab Adhesive when fixing plasterboard to walls ? I have built a single story pitch roof kitchen extension and am now at the stage where I want to dot n dab the thermalite walls with 12mm...

    Which Frame fixing Bolt ?

I'll be fitting fixed panels either side of the French windows. The door frame sides should have reinforced steel in them. What screws do I need to screw the panels to the door frame? Bay Pole screws 4.8 x 50mm (Toolstation 81950)?

    Which Frame fixing Bolt ?

As part of my extension self build I will shortly be installing a set of French windows with a fixed pane on each side of the doors. The bricks I used for the walls are not solid, they have 3 holes in them. The upvc is a 70mm frame and I was thinking of using 122mm Masonry Frame Fixing Screws...

Pitch roof extn - vent above or below membrane?

Abutment vent: thanks. No roofer #1 said to use a breathable membrane which would let the moisture through but it would then condense on the cold tiles so that's why he said to put the ventilation above the membrane, like drawing 101 here I guess...

Pitch roof extn - vent above or below membrane?

Thanks Woody. I'll look out for that type of membrane. Does that mean I won't need an abutment vent where the roof joins the house wall ?
