Damp Brickwork - Single Skin Garage

I believe this is the membrane under the concrete slab, 2 different things I believe? Ventiallation is not an issue as I have 4 air bricks (I hope that’s sufficient for a single car garage anyway!)

Damp Brickwork - Single Skin Garage

Hi All, I’m sure this has been covered so many times, but looking for some first hand experience as to how I’m best to fix this issue. I have a small single skin garage where the lower bricks are damp, and this dampness is soaking into the garage as you’ll see pictured. From what I can see...

Which cable to power Nest thermostat?

Thanks Muggles. I’ve read some people say I can use alarm cable, sounds a bit like a bodge to me so would rather do a proper job.

Which cable to power Nest thermostat?

Hi All, Having my Nest thermostat installed next week and told the sparky I’d run a cable from where the heat link will go, to the thermostat location to save on cost/time. I know it powered via 12v, which cable (preferably something I can pick up from Screwfix or Toolstation) will do the job...

    Is it a problem?

Hi All, My consumer units lighting circuits appear to not be RCD protected, which I believe is highly recommended in this day and age. Would the whole unit need to be replaced, or, can the “switches” or “ways” be swapped round for RCD? This is not something I will be doing myself, but keen to...

Secure TV bracket to strammit wall...

Plasterboard/plaster is no more than 4mm thick. Behind the wall is the bathroom.

Secure TV bracket to strammit wall...

I've found out that the wall I need to mount a TV on (in all fairness, a lightweight 32") is a "strammit" wall (basically a mm thin layer of plaster board stuffed with straw, Google it, it's crazy). I'm going to have a shot at finding the studs and if I find one I'll be happy, but what fixings...

    Squeaky Floorboards ARGH!

Thanks CBW - I’ve had the majority of it up and all looks clean underneath, no pipe work fouling. I’ve banged screws in too which has improved things but still not ideal. The frustrating thing is, I can walk around in one room and here the noises coming from another room, so maybe it’s not the...

    Squeaky Floorboards ARGH!

Hi All, Moved into a new house a few weeks back and all is great apart from the ridiculous noises you get when walking about upstairs. I have 3 bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs and all rooms are the same. I can be walking in my room and hear noises coming from the next bedroom. I’ve attached...

    Straw filled stud wall, fixing!?

Thanks gents. Honestly, there is not a chance you’ll get a rod down there, this stuff is so compact it’s like chipboard. The only way down would be to drill, but then I’ve got to get 3x 2.5mm through the chase and ideally I want to conduit. I’m beginning to think it’s more hassle than it’s worth!

    Straw filled stud wall, fixing!?

It’s a chase of around 18cm downwards into skirting, can’t see that interfering with the integrity of the plasterboard?

    Straw filled stud wall, fixing!?

Thanks all, will give a dry line box a go tomorrow. I’ll chase the cable via conduit, I take it there are no complications / hazards with the wall being filled with straw? The cable shouldn’t come into contact.

    Straw filled stud wall, fixing!?

I thought about that but getting the clips to lock in place seems a nightmare. I think I may have struck lucky as on the right hand side is a stud, so hopefully I can stick a screw into the stud and I’ll have to, dare I say it, grip fill the rest. What a nightmare, never heard of straw in...

    Straw filled stud wall, fixing!?

What started as an easy job has turned into a nightmare. Moving a socket from one corner of the room to another (to stud wall) but appears this wall is full of compressed straw!? Any ideas on how I can get a fixing!?

    What are these hinges called?

Painting these doors and want to replace the hinges, any idea on what I’d Google to find them!?

    Replace patio door cylinder?

Door number 1 is all good, but I can’t seem to find the screw for door number 2 to remove the cylinder. What am I doing wrong!? Ps - It’s not behind the metal plate as pictured, I’ve already had that off.

    What alarm is this?

Just coming back to this, what is the correct way to decommission this without the sirens going off? 1) Engineer code entered (which I believe is the default code) 2) Remove fuse 3) Remove battery Is that logical?
