I've used brick acid and it has turned out quite well. Just a bit of pointing to do and job is a good one. I was also Thinking about applying a light coat of lime wash just to seal the bricks.

That just states "distance from combustible materials" and not minimum distance around the stove. The inset is brickwork which is obviously non combustible.
