    High baseline electricity usage

The reading from the device does seem to correlate with the meter readings, although I do appreciate they may not be 100% accurate. As for the garden lights, I'm not convinced that all the wiring goes via the separate isolator switch marked 'Garden lights'. I have a gut feeling the issue is...

    High baseline electricity usage

Recently moved house and we've noticed that the electricity bills are rather high. So we purchased one of those energy measurement gizmos and did some monitoring. The base energy usage is approximately 0.5 kWph which is like having a portable heater on all the time. This is even during the...

    Timed garage door closer

I'm looking for a device similar to the Garage Butler. Essentially the device will automatically close a garage door after a set time. Unfortunately the Garage Butler (and similar devices) seem to be only available in the US. Does anyone know of a similar device available in the UK? I...

What kind of plug does this take?

Decided to clear the ivy off the walls and found this unit which still has electricity going to it. However, it doesn't take standard UK plugs. What kind of plugs does it take and can you get an adapter for it to take standard UK plugs?

    Under floor insulation

We have an 18th century Georgian house which can get quite drafty. The lounge is all wooden flooring and there are constant drafts coming through the floorboards. Under the lounge is a crawl space where all the external vents are. Its very dry (as is the cellar) with no evidence of damp or...

    Wet underfloor heating

I just Googled why  I guess I'll just insulate unless there are other options that don't involve lifting the floor boards up. However, the original questions remain as our kitchen is laminate and we'd want to do the same there

    Wet underfloor heating

Our house is a massive drafty old Georgian house. We've done a lot in terms of insulation (new double glazing windows, loft insulation, sealing drafts etc). That already has made a massive saving to the gas bill. The main lounge has parquet flooring. This looks like is been installed on top...

Tool to cut through cast iron

For various reasons we need to remove the fireplace cast iron insert without removing the fire surround. What's the best tool that will cut through the cast iron easily? Thanks LF

Looking for name of a specific type of bolt

Thanks for all the replies. The connector bolt tuned up trumps. This is what I'm after, albeit a slimmer version with one end rounded: http://suki-hardware.com/shop/images/267.05.702P1.JPEG

Looking for name of a specific type of bolt

I don't know if these exist, but what I'm looking for is a bolt that is tamper proof externally (completely rounded off), but internally, instead of a nut tightening the bolt, its another bolt tightening it - a bit like a male/female adapter I guess. I assume these exist. Is there a formal...

Flat cold roof to flat warm roof

Thanks for the reply. What size Kingspan k7 should be used? I'm thinking of 100mm but is that overkill?

Flat cold roof to flat warm roof

Part of my 1800s house a flat roof. Whilst the loft is insulated, the flat roof isn't, and the bedroom quickly gets cold. The roof itself is in good condition. I've only had one quote so far and I want to check what the builder said was correct. Essentially to leave the roof as is, build a...

    Unvented heater and system boiler

This is the current setup in the property we've just moved into. Two system boilers that work in tandem One OSO 330 unvented system boiler One water pump One Chanel Plus controller or both heating and water We prefer to have the water heated by the system boiler. So I switched off the...

OSO unvented water heater bleeding me dry

I'm probably being really thick so bear with me. I thought the two system boilers I have provide hot water to the water cylinder and the electric coil is to maintain the heat? Is that not correct? Sorry, I've never had a unvented water heater before so am confused to how they work. We've...

OSO unvented water heater bleeding me dry

Had a nasty shock when I checked my electricity usage over the month. The bill is approx £200! I've isolated the culprit. Its the OSO 330 unvented water heater. Its on a timer so should only heat the water for an hour in the morning. That's how I assume they work. However, the electricity...

    Boilers in tandem replacement question

They're 24kW I think. Presently, one is managing just fine as we only have either upstairs or downstairs switched on. Do both boilers have to be the same make and model? I'm thinking of replacing the broken down one only and using the new one as the master.

    Boilers in tandem replacement question

Not all of them are heated. Only in winter will there be an overlap where both upstairs and downstairs rads are on. Don't boilers step so they are only using gas as per the load required?

    Boilers in tandem replacement question

Is it a system boiler or a conventional boiler that goes with an unvented water heater? Edit: or heat only?
