Shed build - couple of questions!

Hi Big-All - thanks for your reply. I will be aiming for 2.5m max height from the concrete base - that is what I'm taking as ground level. Not really sure what is defined as ground level in the garden, as my garden has many levels!! But assuming some sensibility, 2.5m above the slab it sits on...

Shed build - couple of questions!

Hi everyone, I am part way through a DIY shed build, and have a few things that I would appreciate a second opinion on!! First things first, the shed is going to be 3.6m x 3.0m, apex roof, with the apex along the long end (transverse apex??) as that suits the layout and door position of where...

Ridge vent very hot - is that normal?

This sounds like a silly question, but you don't know what you don't so I have to ask! I have an old Ideal E-Type floor standing boiler, with open flue that runs up to a ridge vent. No obvious problems, has been running fine, although overdue a service. I had some roofers around today and...

Engineered flooring - minimum cut length 1/3 of plank??

I had some engineered oak flooring delivered yesterday, so I'm leaving to acclimatise at the mo, ready to lay on Saturday. I downloaded the fitting instructions to have a read, and they must be generic as they recommend a minimum joint stagger of 500mm. That's fine, but these boards are only...

Rebating threshold rather than using cover strip??

I'm going to be fitting an engineered floor some time this week and have been thnking about the threshold join. I have the same oak thresholds all around the house, so have one of these cut read to fit, but didn't want to use a threshold cover strip if I could avoid it. Mainly because I...

Recommended underlay for engineered flooring going over T&am

Excellent - thanks for clarifying. I had thought I'd read it, but then couldn' find it again to back me up!! Most of the ones with vapour barriers said they were not suitable over block wood or parquet flooring, rather than chipboard & T&G. I have gone with your recommendation of the...

Recommended underlay for engineered flooring going over T&am

Does anyone have any specific recommendations for an underlay for engineered wood flooring going over T&G subfloor? I was going to use something like Timbermate Excel as I've seen it recommended a few times. Thing is, I could be imagining this, but I thought I once read that you shouldn't...

    Decking oil recommnedations??

Have you used the water based one enyam? I hear that this is a recent change, and previously it was solvent based?

    Decking oil recommnedations??

My decking has been down for a three weeks now, so once the next rain spell passes I'd like to get it treated - unless I should leave it a little longer still? I originally bought some Cuprinol decking oil as I had previously used their shed & fence preserver, and liked the results. But when...

    Decking oil - Rubbish?

The Cuprinol Shed & Fence treatment is solvent based, and it definitely repelled water after a couple of days, I could see the rain beading where I'd applied it. Maybe not after it's fully dried out though?

Fixing decking balustrade - quick Q

Any advice appreciated :) The rain is slowing me down quite a bit, but I'll soon be in a position where I want to fit the balustrading and would like to get it right :)

Attached Pergola - best method to fix to ledger plate?

I'm part way through my decking project which incorporates a lean to Pergola. Is it acceptable to notch the rafters and sit them on the ledger plate, then screw down through from the top (exterior wood glue at joint also?) - or would this weaken the rafters too much? I'll use mini joist...

    Decking oil - Rubbish?

John - so you would suggest using a preservative first, otherwise even with regular oiling/cleaning it will soon look sorry? I am just part way through my decking project and bought some Cuprinol decking oil after being advised that this was a better bet than a stain (flaking). I did...

Fixing decking balustrade - quick Q

Just a quick one, I've just finsihed the frame work for my decking and am wondering about best method to fix balustrading between posts. Should the balustrade be 'hung' between posts, so it is only fixed to the posts and has a gap between deck board and base rail. Or can you sit the base...

    Decking/Pergola project - advice needed!

Started to plan it out, as I have 140mm below DPC I'll use 4x2 for the frame work at 400mm centres, joists running outwards from the house from ledger plate, just below DPC. Is it OK for deck board to be level with DPC, as long as it and the ledger are spaced from the wall? Next question I...

    Decking/Pergola project - advice needed!

Last couple of days we have decided to do something about our tatty looking patio, by placing some decking over it. The space will cover the majority of the back of the house at 5.7m wide, going out to 2.7m. In one corner we'd like to put a pergola up, in front of a window. So, a few...

    Stripping & re-sealing slate floor?

After 5 years our kitchen floor is starting to look a little tired, so I'd like to strip the sealer, thoroughly clean the grout and re-seal. The sealer I used was HG Impregnator, which I gather means I'll need a strong removing agent. Any recommendations? I have heard that Aqua Mix make a...

    Closeboard question?

Just a quick one that's been bugging me, but need to know before I go out and order the timber!! Going to use cant rails for my closeboard fence, and as far as I could tell, you'd fix the cant rail to the front of the post, and also the gravel board. The cant rail is 47mm thick, and a...

Closeboard fencing - arris rails with brackets or cant rail?

Cheers again John, I can see this being a time consuming job painting lots of bits of featherboard, posts & rails!! Might use on of my old spray guns & compressor to save a bit of time!

Closeboard fencing - arris rails with brackets or cant rail?

Cheers John, I had a quick look on Cuprinol site, but it wasn't clear if this preserver can be applied to new pressure treated wood? So would you say, it will be best for me to order all of the timber I need, apply preserver, then once dry apply a stain, then start erecting? Does a water...
