if your just diy'ing it and having a go then you can put some bonding agent on the tiles first, then skim it. If the finish isnt great then you can either spend time filling/sanding or line it. After all it is only a utility room.

I rarely use 9.5mm boards. I would never use them on a ceiling and only put them on walls if the customer is supplying. Im looking into hiring a board lifter for a job where the ceiling needs to be done in soundblock boards. Ill be interested to see if they are any good too.

I used to do a lot of plastering for a window firm and all the conservatories I did for them were Dot and Dabbed. You would find it a lot easier to skim onto board and have a better chance of achieving a good finish.
