how do I wire up an extractor fan?

I am needing to install a Marley extractor fan in a shower room. The instructions state that it can be operated by connecting it to a light switch so that the fan will start when the light is switched on. This would be ideal as there is no natural lighting in the room anyway but I am not...

    Shower tray traps

Thanks guys, but how do you disguise the framework? I can't imagine it looks too pretty.

    Shower tray traps

Sorry, probably didn't explain myself too well. I assumed you meant that the height of the tray dictates the type of trap and ultimately the length of seal, regardless of what type of floor I am installing the tray onto, otherwise anyone with a wooden floor would usually be able to do what I...

    Shower tray traps

Thanks Softus, Seeing as I have to run the waste under the floor any way which will involve cutting a hole, could I just not fit a 75 mm seal directly under the tray?

    Shower tray traps

Thanks for the replies. Softus, I've checked out google as Stivino suggetsed. I see what you mean about the bottle traps (I didn't realise that they worked like that  ). However, what seems to be suggested by some of the sites is that if my shower waste is feeding straight into the...

    Shower tray traps

Can anyone out there explain shower tray traps to me. Sorry if I sound a bit thick but the tray that I have just bought has a very small trap and I can not see how it would work. My understanding was that the traps were U shaped in order that they could 'trap' the water and so prevent odours...

    power showers

Thanks for that. I see that you say recommend as opposed to have to. Can I take it that I could use the existing supply, its just that the distance involved for the pipe run is quite long so it would save a lot of hassle.

    power showers

I want to install two power showers and what I want to know is: 1. can just one pump be used for both showers? 2. do the showers have to have their own supply from the hot and cold water tanks or can I take a spur off the pipes supplying the basin, toilet etc.? Thanks in anticipation.

    external front door/frame replacement

I need to replace an aging front door which is well rotten. The frame isn't in too bad condition but the opening measures 850mm x 2010mm. There is no sill, just a concrete base. I visited my local shed which isn't the biggest and the widest doors they had were 838mm wide which would mean a...

    Extending central heating system

Been here before but have finally got round to attempting to extend my central heating system into my 3 bed extension. To begin with my house is singe storey. The existing CH consists of a multi fuel stove equipped with a wrap around boiler which feeds a hot water cylinder in the loft space...

Many thanks guys for all your responses. Not quite unanimous but I have been swayed against the plastic a bit!

    Extending central heating

I am wanting to extend my central heating system into a ground floor extension. I am prepared to do the work myself but I would probably find using the plastic 'speedfit' stuff easier to use as I am a novice at soldering, although I have done small amounts before. What are the disadvantages...

    Intermediate switch on 3-way lighting

:D It's Okay, I think it's right now. I have wired the switch as per the wiring diagram, ignoring the labelling on the switch and all the switches work and it hasn't blown up yet!

    Intermediate switch on 3-way lighting

Thanks for that Spark but the diagram is exactly the same as the one in my book. The switch has four terminals like in the diagram but instead of the top two and bottom two being labelled L1 and L2 respectively there is an L1 and L2 at the top and an L1 and L2 at the bottom.

    Intermediate switch on 3-way lighting

I have used 3 core and earth, so I have the correct amount of wires but as the switch layout does not relate to the diagram I have no idea which one should go where.

    Intermediate switch on 3-way lighting

The wiring diagram that was supplied with an intermediate switch (and also the diagram in my DIY bible) show the switch as having two L1 terminals at the top and two L2 terminals at the bottom. However, the switch has an L1 and L2 at the top and an L1 and L2 at the bottom. I have...

    3 way lighting

It is my intention to fit three-way lighting in my hallway. I thought I could do this by utilising 3x two-way switches. However, looking at my bible it shows 2x two-way switches with an 'intermediate' switch between them. Do I have to buy one of these intermediate switches or is there a way...
