Pine T&G Floorboards - secret nail advice

Am going to lay new 20mm x 118mm wide pine boards onto the existing original floorboards, but have a few queries.... 1) Will it make much difference if the new boards are going to run parallel to the existing boards? That way they will be perpendicular to the joists. The main reason to do it...

just been googling, and apparently it is possible to stack base units. The advice being to make sure you secure the top ones to the wall.

Kitchen units from floor to ceiling?

Hi, at one side of our kitchen there is a boiler about 1/2 way up the wall and all pipework etc running up from it into the ceiling - over 3m high. I want to have this all hidden behind doors, and create some extra storage etc. Only problem is, the highest kitchen units available are only a...

    New Radiator Slow Leak

could a cheap radiator be an issue too? recently on a lot of the plumbing supplies i have installed at home i reckon the machining quality is shoddy (probably some crap chinese made rubbish) judging by the amount of 'extra 1/4 turn' x10 or 'dismantle and cover in ptfe' i have needed to do

Bolts to make nightlatch more secure?

Looks like these size of bolts are not available, but what I did find are various items like London Bars etc which can be fitted to say the back edge of a door and form around a lock or keep to provide extra oomph.

Cast Iron fireplace - pitted, how to remove

Going to spruce up one of the original victorian fireplaces in our house with blackener, but was looking for some advice first.... The bottom section (approx level with where the flames would normally be) is fairly pitted/corroded - there are no visible signs of rust below coming through the...

Pine T&G floorboards - grooved underneath?

Are grooved channels on the underside of pine T&G essential, desirable or unnecessary? Am thinking of something along the lines of 20mm thick, say 140mm wide. Probably sitting on top of original pine boards with a layer of 2mm high density sound-proofing rubber between. And either nailed or...

Can't find bathroom paint for woodwork?

OK, so an external satin is always going to give better performance in these conditions than a standard version? If using oil based, will there ever be any of the leaching that seems to happen in bathrooms where brown oily marks/drops appear on the surface?

Want to paint floorboards - new on top of existing first?

Liking the idea of a nice grey painted floor in the bedroom. Currently it has carpet, layer of insulation and then 2 layers of rubber over the original floorboards. The boards themselves have previously been stripped/varnished and most likely damaged from previous lifting (radiator at window...

Can't find bathroom paint for woodwork?

Last time I painted my bathroom window frame and paneling etc I am pretty sure that I selected a specific bathroom paint, to suitable for humid environments. Yesterday I went into B&Q  and they had no such thing (well, only bathroom suitable paint for walls). Is my memory getting hazy...

Bolts to make nightlatch more secure?

I have a storm door which has a nightlatch and a rim latch - not the strongest considering the size and structure of the door, since the things are only as strong as a few screws going into the wood. I was hoping to find something like small coach bolts that could go through the full thickness...

Shower tray surround - what material?

Have just installed a pentagonal shower and tray and I have now got about 18cm gap between the bottom of it and the floor. I was looking to find a section of some form of say white PVC cladding which can be cut to fit the gap. Any idea what to use and where to get it?? Ideally I would like to...

    Tanking

also tanked recently - on top of newly plastered/SBR'd wall and have found that the tanking membrane is very prone to nicks/holes with the likes of masking tape or the edge of a tile offered up if i'm careless :( never attempted to see if i could peel the whole lot off, perhaps mine would have...

    Gas supply pressure fluctuation??

thanks for the advice guys - will get my plumber to have a look at potentially replacing the 15mm with something larger in the first instance

    Gas supply pressure fluctuation??

A few nights ago it was noticed that it was impossible to get the bath to fill hotter than lukewarm. Next morning was similar, but before and since its not been an issue. Is the gas supply prone to pressure fluctuations - could that explain it? The gas fire was also on, and while running the...

Wooden Garden Benches - but where from?

Looking to get a bench or two for the garden, maybe even the pub-style picnic type and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for something fairly robust, but not too expensive?? Or anywhere within the Glasgow area for a more local service?

Blanking one side of a compression fitting

I guess, but isn't there potential for leaks as I would effectively be using the same olives twice which I thought wasn't recommended? Actually, on thinking its the two sides of the tee in-line that are being retained so an elbow won't work for either the brass or plastic.
