    Painting exterior wall

Now the bedroom's about finished, I want to paint my terrace, as it looks like it's not been done for a while. I just wondered how I should prepare the surface? It's already painted white, and I'm going to paint the same colour. There are a few places where the paint has flaked off a bit, and a...

    Chipping channel out of tiling?

So it shouldn't be too much of an issue for my builder to do then? I haven't asked him about it yet, but I have to explain in French exactly what i want, so wanted to make sure it was possible first!

    Worktop extension

It's a 38mm thick worktop - 606mm deep. I guess I'll replace the whole piece, with the baton support underneath and the pole support at the other end. I don't think I'm going to be climbing on it, as there are cupboards above it, so hopefully it should be fine. Thanks for the help!

    Worktop extension

Not sure if I should post this here - hope so! I want to replace a piece of worktop in my new flat. The kitchen is an Ikea kitchen, so I can buy the worktop to match no problems. I'm just not sure what is best to do. The current piece of worktop is about 70cm and has a unit of drawers...

    Chipping channel out of tiling?

Hope I'm posting this in the right section... In my new flat there's a very newly fitted kitchen (18 months old) and we want to extend a part of the worktop, as there's a whole half-wall that could be used for worktop but is currently "dead" space (the previous owners had a table there). The...

    Intercom question

My apartment building has an intercom system connected to the doorbells for each flat. The handset we have in our flat is a bit rubbish and it's quite hard to hear what people are saying when they talk through it from the front door. Can we just replace our handset for a newer one, or would it...

Another question about painting a freshly skimmed room

OK, so I had my rubbish walls completely skimmed and some bits deeply filled where there were holes and things. Anyway, the room is now virtually dry, so I wanted to start painting at the weekend. As a first-time house-owner and DIY-er, I have a few questions: 1) I understand that I should put...

plaster problems (blown) need advice (pics inside)

We just stripped a bedroom in our 1930s appartment and uncovered walls in a similar state. We ended up having the shot plaster removed, parts completely replastered and the whole lot skimmed. I would really recommend doing this, as we found that even part of the wall where there weren't cracks...

To lining paper or to not to lining paper?

I'm having my bedroom walls/ceiling completely skimmed and re-plastered in places, as the walls are a bit rubbish underneath the 3 layers of wallpaper we've just stripped. My question is this: Can I paint directly onto the fresh plaster once it's dry or do I need to put up lining paper? If I can...

    Feature wall

Well in my flat a feature wall is one that is painted a different colour to the others in a room. So for example, in my bedroom, I have one blue wall, and 3 creamy beige walls. We picked the most visible wall - the one behind the bed - as the "feature wall" as out of the 3 other walls, one has...

    split post: Euro plugs

Most appliances these days are earthed - particularly things like TVs, DVD players, etc. If it has a fitted manufacturer's plug, chances are it is earthed. It's really very easy to change all the plug - you simply cut the old one off, strip the wire, and connect the new plug. European plugs only...

    Plastering behind radiator?

Thanks for the replies. I had a builder round last night and he reackons he can drain the system and move the radiator, as the wall needs re-rendered behind where there's been a damp problem in the past. I think you're right in that the plumber just wasn't fancying the job himself!!

Removing layers of paint from woodwork

I'm a bit new to this, so sorry for the dumb questions. I'm renovating my bedroom and the woodwork has 3 layers of gloss paint on it. What would be the best thing to get through the paint quickly? I've tried painting on a paint stripper, and that seems to still require a lot of scraping to get...

    Plastering behind radiator?

We've have just moved into a 1930s flat and this weekend have stripped off 3 layers of wallpaper in one room to find some walls in good condition, and some in need of some attention. In particular, we've found a slight hole just above the radiator. Our radiators are inset into the wall, and are...
