    Running power cables between buildings

Hello, I moved into a property where there is a very rough supply to an unattached garage. Basically its 1x2.5mm and 1x 1.5mm cable running about 2.5m off the ground from the kitchen to the garage - they are then tie wrapped together. Its not good - the amount of times I have nearly taken it...

Hi - I have an ugly box where the supply from the pole comes into the property. I need to move it about 5 meters or so, however there isnt enough slack in the cable. I see there is something called "BT16A external box with crimps", is this the right sort of thing? I am fine with electrics...

Hi Question is about mortar mix, I need to fill a gap of about 250mm above a steel beam. Its not load bearing/structural just decorative so when cementing on top of steel anything beside 3/1 mix I should be doing. I have done minor jobs to brick/stone before but never steel - cant get in my head...

    Roof construction

The structure wasn't the issue, I will be getting an SE at some point it was more to do with building regs as to what insulation/felt type etc so I can have it clear in my mind, so I can be 100% clear when I finalise this with the builder.

    Roof construction

Hi, having some quotes done on a single extension pitch roof and for my own sake would like an unbiased answer to how it should be done, as different builders have given me different answers. It will be a cathedral roof (no roof space). My understanding from the outside in is...

    Hip Roof support help

I did also look at that, with the addition of fresh timber either side but was concerned that the bricks lower down somehow provide support for the upright - even if it stops it bowing. I couldn't see any other reason for bricks in what looks like a stud wall.

    Hip Roof support help

Hi Need advise on methods of repair before I speak with a builder. I have a hip roof where purlins are fixed into a wall but the other end has some supports which seem to be supported from an upright which sits on the upstairs joists. The uprights have split (shake)- the house is however 110...

Help with new boiler and future shower

I will be replacing the existing incoming lead water main with MDPE at the same time - so I don't see mains flow or pressure being an issue. So I should be ok with a combi - but better with un-vented and system boiler (not familiar with either) Any suggestion on size on both?

Hi Having a new boiler fitted soon in a standard 3 bed home, going for a standard combi probably Worcester or Valiant 30kw - however in the future I will need a new bathroom and love great powerful showers, I have read you need a cylinder for water with a pump to achieve this. I dont want to...

Hi I will have to remove tiles from a wall which will leave a real mess, I was thinking of going further and taking it back to brick then putting on board with a skim. This is a 1900 property on an outside wall. Is it acceptable to use board with a narrow space behind to create an extra...

    Water supply and pressure questions

Back again, water supply is taken care of with plastic 25mm, but have a further question regarding flow. Would it be better to run a 22mm pipe off the mains as a sort of feed for the all the taps/outlets and then just before the outlets drop down to a more conventional 15mm for ease? Or...

    Water supply and pressure questions

Hello, I am well into a project to renovate a bathroom, Question 1; I am wanting to install a water supply to the property to replace the lead pipe, a contractor tells me that the supply would not have to exit inside the property but could actually exit inside the attached garage - true or a...

    Pressure Gauge Tools

Hello, further on with a project where pressure/flow is the problem - I have decided I need to measure one or both at different times and locations. I found a common meter online "Mains Water Pressure Test Gauge 11 Bar" a gauge on a tube, would I be correct in thinking this will only tell me...

Trying to improve supply flow/pressure to a shower

With regard to pressure my previous electric shower had a minimum pressure level of just under 1 bar and would trip easily especially at peak times even after modifications, so I am sure its around 1 bar. There are a few pumps after some searching - I think Salamander obviously have the...
