    Plasterers boarded new block wall

Just puzzled really, no big deal, but the plasterers doing my new extension stuck plasterboard to the newly built walls and skimmed it. The finished result looks fine but I am just puzzled as to why they didn't apply a plaster base to the walls instead and then finish coat? It always used to be...

Best board to use for sub floor?

I didn't know that. I assumed that joins in a ply/chip/OSB subfloor wouldn't show through underlay and vinyl, I have somew samples of click vinyl and I am surprised at how thick and rigid it is (I expected it to be floppy!). I can't see how 1 or 2 mm joins would show through that. (Or even T & G...

Best board to use for sub floor?

Thanks for the info - excellent. I am looking at a) the cheapest solution and b) something that I can lay click vinyl on without having to raise the height any further. If raising the height wasn't an issue then I would leave the floorboards and lay ply on top.

Best board to use for sub floor?

I need to rip up wobbly old floorboards and replace with a flat surface to lay vinyl over. To be level with the rest of the finished floor whatever I use needs to be 18mm thick. OSB3 or Structural softwood Plywood seem to be the best options, with plywood being more expensive. Any advice?

Having to T off 15mm for extra rad

Woah! Prempts my next question: ideally I need to tee two new rads of this existing rad 15mm. I assumed that I could only get away with one; am I being too cautious (the boiler has enough capacity)? One of the new rads would be essentially side by side with the existing rad so I could pipe...

Having to T off 15mm for extra rad

I know it's not really a good idea but I really have no other choice, I cannot get to the 22mm flow and return pipes. My main concern is the length of the pipe run of the existing rad: it is 8 metres away from the F and R and I intend to cut into it's 15mm about 5 metres along it's run. There...

Type of ply to cover floorboards?

Thanks for the reply. But which of the options in Wickes etc. is "bog standard" ply?

Type of ply to cover floorboards?

I need to cover floorboards to lay vinyl click floor on in a dining room. The floorboards are sound and pretty level. I am thinking 9mm ply will do the job? Confused by the different types of ply though: Hardwood Softwood Marine WBP Birch Structural Non-Structural Advice on which to use would...

Back box size for rj45 network face plate?

I have found some info suggesting that I need at least a 45mm deep back box (to be chopped into brick and plaster) for a network port faceplate. What I cannot find is what width/height the box should be. The single port faceplates I am looking at say "fits a 89mm x 89mm" back box. But all of...

Okay to screed to finish floor level?

Having an extension built to the dining room with existing wall knocked through. The dining room has floorboards. The current plan is to screed the extension to top of the dining room floor joists level. However I want to lay vinyl (either click boards or sheet) across the whole lot. As that...

    Laminate floor in new kitchen

Thanks guys. Floor hasn't even been screeded yet so I am the the planning stages. From what you have said, and I have read elsewhere, I think I am heading towards vinyl floor. Only thing is I can lay laminate but am not confident cutting and laying rolls of vinyl so will have to pay someone to...

    Laminate floor in new kitchen

I have an extension being built ready for a new kitchen. I intend to lay laminate flooring and all of the advice I have read suggests that best practice is installing the kitchen units first and then flooring up to them. Two questions: How do I finish the edges where the laminate meets end...

Need to move cooker switch - Part P?

But not if it is on a safe zone - or did I read that incorrectly?

Need to move cooker switch - Part P?

Thanks ban-all-sheds. I have read up on safe zones now (not some dark and complicated thing as I assumed!) and all cable runs can be in safe zones.

Need to move cooker switch - Part P?

The chances of that are nil unless I was really stupid (even then I am hard pushed to think how I could create that scenario). All I am doing is extending a cable. This involves connecting live, neutral and earth to live, neutral and earth, checking I have done it correctly, checking again, and...
