Efco jet 300A petrol strimmer - won't start

Someone has given me a petrol strimmer, an old Efco Jet 300A. It won't start, and a search online has not thrown up a manual for it, although I found one for a different Efco model. I took the plug out. Looks OK. Brown, not black. Gapped it to 0.7mm. Peered inside the carb, looks OK...

How to waterproof a structure below ground level?

I'm intending to make a storage/workspace (think of it as a garden shed) which is on a steep slope. It will be a permanent structure with a hard floor (flags) and block walls with a timber frame on top. Because of the slope, the uphill side will have a higher block wall, which will be in...

Boarding of loft after new insulation has been laid

Someone's said I should try 'loft legs'. Are they a good idea? Never heard of them but I have looked them up so get the idea.

Boarding of loft after new insulation has been laid

Right, so I'll need to do some cutting to get to the joists. Ah well, needs must.

Boarding of loft after new insulation has been laid

They said it would be quilt. Is this likely to be laid between the joists or over the top of them?

Boarding of loft after new insulation has been laid

I have contractors coming on Friday, to lay new insulation (part of the government grant scheme). I've emptied the loft accordingly, but they tell me that the new insulation will be well above the level of the joists, and I would like to re-board the loft afterwards, without compressing the new...

Main Combi Eco 30 - CH ok but no HW

Do you mean the CH sensor as well as the DHW sensor? The CH sensor is really awkwardly positioned right up at the top. It would be! Just checked and its still under warranty which is good news, so may as well get the installer to check it seeing as it's free. Hopefully he's not gone on...

Main Combi Eco 30 - CH ok but no HW

Our boiler is working fine on the CH circuit - fires up no problem when the timer kicks in, rads nice and hot. Unfortunately, turn on a hot tap and the burner won't fire. If the burner is already on for the CH, turning on a hot tap makes it go out! The boiler temp drops like a stone, down to...

polycarbonate roof end caps - how to fit?

I'm installing a polycarbonate roof on a conservatory and the glazing bars (snap-down type) have these plastic end caps which I thought would just clip in but they don't. Anyone have any idea how they are meant to go on? They are roughly rectangular, with a curved top edge, but are maybe...

New house roof but big conservatory

We are thinking of saving up for a new roof on the house in the next couple of years or so. Thing is, we have a conservatory almost spanning the rear of the house (some 5m wide) and extending out 3m from the house wall. How big a problem would that be for the scaffolding and re-roofing?

    "snow-catcher" above conservatory?

Oh right! I thought they were 'Steearsers' or summat? Nah anyway. The name refers to a great weekend a few years back, with my now wife. :D

    "snow-catcher" above conservatory?

    Erm...is that a building term?

    "snow-catcher" above conservatory?

I'm building a polycarbonate roofed conservatory on the back of the house. A bloke I know who is an ex-builder says I ought to install a "snow-catcher" above the house guttering, above the polycarb roof, to prevent smnow-slides and also pieces of roof tile damaging the roof. After last winter...

    Ariston Margherita 2000 rattling drum

The machine seems to have something small and hard or metallic, trapped between the perforated drum and the outer drum housing. It makes a right racket when the spin cycle starts, but I can hear it if I rotate the drum by hand. It's 'just there' if you know what I mean. It's probably a coin...

Gainsborough shower packed in - looking for replacement

Ah. Bugger. That was one thing I hoped would disappear when we get the combi!

Gainsborough shower packed in - looking for replacement

We're getting a combi installed in a couple of months, which is one reason I don't want to spend much. Next year I want a walk-in shower with overhead spray and hot/cold controls off the combi. So what practical difference does the power rating make?

Gainsborough shower packed in - looking for replacement

I looked at prices for parts, and they seem more expensive than buying a 2nd hand shower! How much would an element cost? Site I looked at was suggesting £60+!

Gainsborough shower packed in - looking for replacement

The Gainsborough Energy 2000 9.5kW that's been in the house since we moved in has packed in and now won't deliver hot unless you crank it round almost to the maximum, and then it's only a dribble of warm water. So I've decided to chuck it. As we're planning a major refurb in a couple of years...
