Have messaged the previous owner, with photos, see what they say :)

Agreed, with thermostatically controlled devices it’s rare. But it could happen. Next plan is to try and find out who did the wiring - was it the previous owner, or a dodgy sparky they employed? Hmmmm

No, the cables were joined by twisting them together and covering in electrical tape. Can’t believe someone would do that on a socket ring. Not even sure it was this that was causing the problem, could have been a loose connection at the back of the FCU. worrying thing is, we moved in here...

Not liking it at all (don’t even think they’re crimped! No grommets on box either. (unsure why images have rotated on uploading - sorry!) think I might add a mother 25mm pattress box to the left of this FCU, with just a blanking plate on the front, and join the cables using wago’s behind -...

so, don’t like the look of new to old wires wrapped in blue tape and heading left out of the box towards the new socket and FCU. What you think?

Yes 2.5mm cables. There was no continuity on the live ring when tested at CU. Didn’t check neutral or earth but can do. To update on what I’ve done, I removed one end of the ring from the breaker. Roughly half the sockets energised. Checked with just the other end of the ring connected, the...

Hi all, Normally I’d get a sparky in to investigate, but we are self isolating due to my son having a temperature and cough. I went to replace a double socket with one of these super duper usb-equipped sockets in the kitchen (apparently it’ll allow the boss to charge her phone, as well as have...

Vinyl straight onto concrete, or wood first?

House only built in 2005, so hoping it should have a DPM. How would I check? I’ve read mixed reviews on self levelling compound vs plywood. Decided to go with plywood as easier to get up in the future if needed.

Vinyl straight onto concrete, or wood first?

Hi all, Spent all morning lifting old ceramic tiles from our kitchen and utility room floor, and scraping the concrete subfloor to remove adhesive. Going to put down vinyl flooring (the sheet kind) for now. As it’s only 4mm thick, do I need to put plywood or hardwood sheets down first, or is...

Putting Xmas lights on outside of house :(

(I know this isn’t exactly an electrics query, but it didn’t seem to fit anywhere else!) So the missus has stipulated that she wants lights on the outside of the house this Xmas. Will want to put lights (probably icicle lights) along the parts marked in red below: So, few questions...

Brick BBQ - from block paving?

Thanks bud. Any idea what bricks, or even what colour, are in the photos I attached? Cheers

Brick BBQ - from block paving?

Thanks, suspected the concrete might be an issue with cracking, but exploding blocks - no thanks! The other option is to build it with bricks similar to the house bricks (since bbq will be up against garage wall anyway). Problem is - how do I identify the bricks I’ve got? (I’m assuming they’re...

Brick BBQ - from block paving?

Just finished a largish block paving project and have loads of charcoal blocks (200mm x 100mm x 50mm) left over. Looking at building a brick BBQ, and was wondering if it’s feasible to build it from these instead of normal bricks? Obviously there’s no frogs etc, but should surely be strong...

Replacing multipoint lock on patio door

Hi, I have an oldish set of uPVC French doors that needs a new multipoint lock. The current lock is a Mila unit, with 2 hooks, 2 rollers and a shootbolt top and bottom. Seems to be only a 25mm backset (most seem to be 35mm). I've identified the lock as the following...

    Timber Shed Base

Hi all, Having an 8x6 shed delivered next week, so suppose I’d better get a base built. I have ordered some lengths of 47 x 100 pressure treated timber (6x 1800mm, 2x 2400mm) The timber will be going straight onto the lawn, probably with metal (or wooden) spikes driven in for stability and...

Changing kitchen ceiling rose to led ceiling light

Nope, not from here. Smoke alarms are on their own circuit. Someone else suggested a circular dry lining box, but not sure there’d be enough room for all the connectors needed

Changing kitchen ceiling rose to led ceiling light

Trying to work out in my head why there would be so many cables there... Ignoring the blue and brown heading to the bulb holder, I can think of: 1 t&e from previous light on radial 1 t&e to next light on radial 1 t&e to the security light 1 3 core and earth to the extractor fan switch 1 2 core...
