    Crystal Royale coal bed

Since I last had my Crystal Royale gas fire serviced, a couple of the coals have fallen down the bed and rested on the glass. When the gas engineer replaced the coals, he put them back as per the manual that I keep, which to be fair isn't brilliant in this area. Anyway, I had a go at replacing...

    Tap spacer

Guessed this was possibly the case. I will trim accordingly. Did question the "less than 35mm" bit. It would be some serious sink that was thicker than that. My old composite sink was only a few mm thick. Perhaps they mean 3.5mm? Thanks anyway.

    Tap spacer

I am about to fit a Watersmith mono tap to a stainless sink. There is a triangular plastic spacer supplied which the instructions say is for use if the sink is less than 35mm thick. Mine obviously is thinner than this but the spacer will not sit flat under the sink due to the shape of the sink...

    Masons mitre assebbly tips

Thanks. Some good tips there. I see he uses PVA which would appear to be ok. Is this better than silicone or acrylic sealer? I have plenty of worktop offcuts so I think I will try a test piece before I do the real one. My new worktops are black gloss so I don't want to use anything that will...

    Masons mitre assebbly tips

I fitted my current laminated kitchen worktop about 10 years ago and it went ok but I was never fully satisfied with the joints which I never got completely flat. I am just about to install a replacement laminated worktop and would just like a bit of advice to help me get good level and...

    Quartz worktops

I am considering replacing my laminate kitchen worktops with quartz. I have had quotes from a couple of local "designer" kitchen companies which do seem a bit high. They both subcontract out the fitting of these worktops and you get the feeling they would really like you to buy a whole new...

    Flattening pine planks

I have recently removed the pine rails from a ranch style staircase. These are 25mm x 250mm in varying lengths and I would like to use the wood for another project. Unfortunately, they have becomes slightly bowed in the 40 plus years they have been in place. I would like them thinner (18mm -...

    Compression or one piece reducer.

I must admit that I feel more comfortable with the two piece as there is some allowance for nipping up if there is a weep. Not sure if you can do this with a one piece. I may be wrong though.

    Compression or one piece reducer.

Which are the best type of 15mm to 8mm pipe reducers for radiator valves. Are the one piece or the sets using an olive better? Thanks. Ps, my title is not really correct, I am aware both types are classed as compression fittings.

    Thinner worktop dilemma

The cooker is floor standing with no further adjustment downwards. My original plan was to raise the units but it occurred to me that there was another option, that of adding a spacer. I asked in case anyone saw an advantage to using a ply spacer. If there is none, raising the cabinets it will be.

    Thinner worktop dilemma

I agree about the plinths, a 10mm gap at the top is unlikely to be visible.

    Thinner worktop dilemma

I am going to replace my current 40mm particle type kitchen worktop with 30mm quartz. I am getting this professionally fitted. The new worktop top surface needs to be at the same height as the original to keep it flush with the cooker glass lid, (the cooker cannot be lowered). There are some...

    Wooden Cubes and Squares

I'll get a finer blade and give the cubes a go. I was aiming for around 5mm maximum thickness for the tiles. I was hoping to avoid end grain on the faces so would ideally cut from 25mm x 5mm strip. The only problem here is that I would have to round the corners individually unless I could stack...

    Wooden Cubes and Squares

I was thinking of treating myself to a sliding cross cut/mitre saw. Would this be a better bet? Also, should I use a relatively fine blade? If so what sort of TPI should I be looking for? Thanks.

    Wooden Cubes and Squares

I want to make a large number of wooden cubes and square tiles approx 25mm in size. These are for wooden puzzles, hopefully to be sold at craft fairs so the finish needs to be good and they all need to be of a uniform size. In the case of the tiles, the corners need to be slightly rounded. For...

    Preps for bird spikes

I am going to fit seagull spikes to my ridge tiles and chimney once the current family have disappeared. I've put up with them for many years but now they are dropping shellfish onto my flat roof from a height to break them open, enough is enough. The recommended adhesive for these is silicone...

Loss of ITV signal in the evening

I am currently losing the signal to all ITV channels and BBC HD channels at about 18:30 every evening. The signal strength on the TV shows Signal Strength 0%, Bit Error Level 2000. At the same time, BBC 1 and 2 signals are at Signal strength 98%, Bit Error Level 0. I am not sure what time things...

    New power supply to garage

All I am saying is that there is now a spare way from t my CU which was not there before. I do not need a 30A supply to the garage so would change the breaker to 16A and select cable size accordingly. Running the garage supply from a dedicated circuit in the CU must be preferable to what I have now.

    New power supply to garage

I want to run a new power supply to my garage which is about two metres from my house. The current supply is basically spurred from the kitchen ring, through the wall and then on to the garage via a catenary wire. The most it supplies is a freezer, a light and power hand tools. However, I have...

    13A Plug with indicator

Is it possible to get a 13A plug with a built in blown fuse indicator. After having a freezer defrost due to a blown fuse recently, it struck me that if there is no external indicator on the freezer (which mine hasn't) you could have a blown fuse and not know until it was too late.
