    metal ties for wooden ladders

Does anyone know what the metal straps underneath the rungs on wooden ladders are called and where I can get them. I have an A-frame ladder and the rungs are still in good condition, but the metal straps are rusted and I would like to replace them.

    Leaking corner of bath

Thanks Graeme and FourFootMedia (great username) for info and advice. Thought I had used good silicone but didn't pay £10. But I have some Everbuild in the garage and so will try this. I am not sure how the bath is secured, but will check this. Not sure I can get another bracket in place...

    Leaking corner of bath

Hi, Whenever we use the shower above the bath, the water leaks into the kitchen below. I have identifed the leak and it is in the corner of the bath. I removed all the silicon around the bath and resealed. The bath was filled with water and left for 24hrs. I then applied a self adhesive...

Wiring options for loft conversion sockets

Thanks to all for the info. Either of the two proposed options would be OK for me as there is still clear access to all wires and sockets.

Wiring options for loft conversion sockets

Still on with my loft conversion. Whilst I have all plaster removed and floorboards up, I want to route some cable for the sockets to the loft. I have attached two options for wiring to the sockets. Are both OK? Apologies for the quality of the drawing, but it is not a bad attempt considering it...

    ring main query

Thanks 'Ban-All-Sheds' for the comments. There is obviously more to electrics than I had envisage and so will not bother. I will leave it to the experts, probably save me money in the long term.

    ring main query

    The spec is 3 x 32, 1 x 16, 2 x 6 and 1 x 40. The unit is still boxed and has never been used. The price is £20.

    ring main query

When connecting the two 2.5mm T&E cables from the ring main to the consumer unit, do you connect both live to the same MCB or to 2 separate ones? I ask because I have been offered an MK consumer unit at a reasonable price, but am unsure if there would be enough connectors. Of course I will be...

    Kitchen RCD's

Thanks for the info. Am I right to assume then, the ring circuit for the Kitchen sockets could be run in parallel from the existing ring main, providing there is sufficient rating and the sockets above the work top are RSD protected.

    Kitchen RCD's

I was reading a previous discussion which stated not connecting the fridge freezer to the RCD for the kitchen. I thought all circuits in the kitchen had to be protected by an RCD and so how could you avoid this for the fridge freezer socket?

    Cooker cable

Most single ovens are 3kW or less, and plug into a 13A socket. Does this mean you could plug into a standard 2.5mm ring??? or am I showing my stupidity.

    Cooker cable

I have read through a number of the discussions about the correct size cable for cookers and realise it is a bit complex. My situation is this; the total run will be approx 16mtrs. 2mtrs of which will be behind plasterboard (dry lined). The cable will run from the front of my terraced house...

    What grade for floor joists

Hi anyone, I am converting my attic into an 'attic room'. The floor joists will span 3.470mtrs without support, other than being joined with joist hangers at either end. Can I use C16 T1 graded 200 x 47mm carcassing with nogins in the center or will I need an higher grade timber.

    Creating larger loft space

Hi Deluks, thanks for your reply. You are correct this is to create a new floor for the attic. Therefore I plan to lower the upstairs ceiling by 2ft also. My problem is the new attic floor will be approx 2ft lower and so whether I use timber or steel this will also be lower and so not in...

    Creating larger loft space

First timer, so be kind please. I have just bought a small 2 bed terraced and want to convert the loft to create a small 3rd bedroom. I am pretty handy at DIY and have done two previous refurbs on terraces. I have also done a loft conversion in a 1920 3 bed semi which was passed off by the...
