    Wallpaper suddenly sagging

Hi all. My parents have just sent me some pictures of their wallpaper which has been on the wall for years....it's suddenly started sagging and they have no idea why! And nor do I(n)! I guessed at a water leak or similar but they've not noticed any other symptoms. The other side of the wall...

Plastering over a small single chase

Hi all I’ve done a bit of plastering over my years, but usually starting from scratch and using multi. I’ve been volunteered to assist the in-laws with covering up a chase following them having an electrical socket moved about 2 ft down the wall, so it’s not the largest of areas. From the...

    Cladding brick wall

Thanks Woody. A few things for me to think about. Specifically I hadn't considered the water pooling on the battens. What alternative would you use to timber battens? I guess that, failing coming up with a batten alternative, what I'll do is polythene the wall for damp protection, then batten...

    Cladding brick wall

Morning all I have a retaining brick wall running the perimeter of my garden approx 20m x 70cm. The brick work is shot, but repaired in the worst places. (I can't afford to replace the whole thing). My intention is to clad this wall with 80cm vertical cladding and I've just bought a load of tgv...

Plastering over a lot of wires

Chaps Just after a quick bit of advice please. I've had my house rewired, and all of the cabling from the fuse box has come up through on the other side of the wall. I now need to fill that area. Should I just put an inspection hatch in, which will allow access to the wires or should I just...

Changing 1 gang to 2 gang

If you must know, I've been called Sparky since I was a kid, so I've used that username since then. Sorry it's caused so much offence:whistle:

Changing 1 gang to 2 gang

Thanks all. That last idea of the conduit seems like the best and most easy idea for someone like me. Thank you all. Very helpful

Changing 1 gang to 2 gang

Ok I think I got that- what I'll do is run a length of 3 core from the socket and leave the remaining length in the roof. When I get my electrician in, he can rewire the switch with the 3 core easily and wire up my Downlights, and do what he needs to do with the ceiling rose. Thanks for your help

Changing 1 gang to 2 gang

Yeah, so basically I was thinking that one switch would turn all the downlights on for normal lighting, and the 2nd switch would turn on some hidden recessed uplights in the soffit. So, the wire I've got in there is the standard grey one that they've used reels of when rewiring the place. Will...

Changing 1 gang to 2 gang

Hi all, Im in the process of plasterboarding some walls in a bedroom, before I skim them. I intend to later replace the ceiling rose with an array of spotlights, and some other type of mood light in a soffit, but this will require me having a 2 gang light switch. Before I plasterboard over the...

    Laminate flooring transition

Perfect, thanks for that crazydaze. I wasnt aware of such a product on the market, but that looks like itll work a treat. The only slight problem I foresee, is that the doorway in question has a bedroom door next to it at a 90degree angle, and that will be carpetted to the same level as the...

    Laminate flooring transition

hi all I've recently refurbished my bathroom and am in the process of sorting the flooring out. Initially I was going to tile the floor, so I put 6mm plywood over the floorboards (and fitted the cupboards over the top). However, I've now decided that I'm going to use laminate flooring...

    Tile adhesive still wet

hi all About a week ago, I tiled my bathroom using big 600x300 porcelain tiles. In the shower area, I waterproofed it using the Mapai waterproofing kit, and decided to use a different adhesive to the screwfix own brand, for that area. I bought and used ' unibond shower adhesive for large...

    Skimming over hardwall

hi all. Bit of a newbie here...so go easy on me.... I've had some electrical work and plumbing/heating work on my house, and some of the chases have been filled with what I expect is bonding or hardwall. I have also filled 3 large unused 'hotair' vents using the mixture (I forget what was in...

    Problem with toilet flushing

Well I've been pumping the button with my thumb without the cover switch even on, and it's not doing anything at all so don't think it's that. Thanks anyway

    Problem with toilet flushing

Hi all, I was wondering if you could help me, or specifically, my parents. Their toilet has stopped flushing, and has now been out of use for a couple of weeks (and their bladders are getting pretty full now!) The cistern is a Dudley 212- A. It is a...
