    Tiling over trade emulsion

Quick update... I've done the 'tape test' using heavy duty cloth tape (used in the asbestos removal industry, so very sticky) and the paint did not come off. Does that help?

    Tiling over trade emulsion

Yup, sorry folks, that old chestnut again... I am refurbing the downstairs cloakroom (WC and wash basin, no bath or shower). House was built in 1996 and the walls (dot and dabbed plasterboard with no skim) were painted with trade matt emulsion (I'm guessing, cos in the early days cleaning...

Wiring to illuminated cupboard in bedroom

Thanks Tony, and yes, all cabling is in safe zones in the wall voids. Where it disappears under the flooring in the loft we have marked the cable runs on the floor. 2-gang socket is wired in 1.5 T&E, was intending to run a further length of 1.5 to the mirror cabinet going directly up from the...

Wiring to illuminated cupboard in bedroom

Greetings all, and happy Friday! I'm installing an illuminated (LED) cupboard in a bedroom (it's a bathroom cabinet, but daughter wants it for make-up etc above her dressing table). I have added a new 2-gang socket near where the cabinet is going (had to run the new socket on a single T&E from...

Reduction in final connection to bathroom extract duct?

Thanks jj4091, but I have to fit 150mm duct first to allow for the flaps to open. If I try to use the existing condensation trap it would mean having 100mm of solid duct (150 dia) then a reducer, then the condensation trap, then 100mm flexi pipe to the roof. Not sure if that is going to be...

Reduction in final connection to bathroom extract duct?

Hi All, I've just changed a 20 year old bathroom extractor (which did a brilliant job) for a nice shiny new 100mm Xpelair model (which doesn't do anything - paintwork will need re-doing to remove black condensation marks after just 3 weeks!) To try to overcome this, I've now purchased a 150mm...

Shower pump giving up after 5 minutes?

Other hot taps are not affected, and hot water continues to go through the pump to the shower head, just without and pressure... As such I'm guessing that feed from CW tank to HW tank is OK. Also, the water comes out VERY hot, possibly indicating that HW supply is fine but CW supply is...

    soffits board

Asbestos cement, which was often used for soffit boards, was not banned in the UK until late-1999. Having said that, the use of asbestos soffit boards slowed down long before then although it was relatively common in the undercloaking to roof tiles right up until 1999.

Indeed! Many thanks for the advice - much appreciated. :D

    Aqua Lisa showers

Thanks! But 2nd guy said that 22mm would still be better, with just the last 150mm or so reduced to 15mm. As I spent £50 on 22mm plastic pipe and God knows how much on 22mm maintenance valves and various other 22mm bits, I am happy to run it all in 22mm, even if the Surrey flange only...

    Aqua Lisa showers

Bathroom will be Aqualisa Visage digital (cos it was dead cheap) and en suite will be Aqualisa Quartz digital, both will be exposed versions.

    Aqua Lisa showers

Cos it's only 15mm, and Aqua Lisa say 22mm feeds are better if possible... Also, the exsiting pumped shower arrangement is a maintenance nightmare, so I guessed that a totally new and accessible system might be easier for a plumbing-pleb like me, maybe not initially, but certainly if and when...

    Aqua Lisa showers

Yeah-but-no-but-yeah-but.... I do have one shower currently pumped off an Essex flange, but as the pump from the Essex flange won't last much longer (New Team or something....) the idea was to fit an Aqual Lisa it its place, and fit a separate Aqua Lisa to the other bathroom to replace the...

    Aqua Lisa showers

Hi All, I intend fitting 2 Aqual Lisa pumped showers in my loft, so the other day I spent ages fitting a Surrey flange to the HW cylinder, and a 22mm take-off from the CW tank, the idea being that I could T off the new 22m feeds to supply both showers. However, according to the Aqua Lisa...

Shower pump giving up after 5 minutes?

Yup - ball valve is fine, no air in the system either, but it does appear that when I cut the new take-off from the CW tank that some swarf might have managed to escape down the feed pipe... Went to check the pump last night, but the gate valves are not holding up and the water came p!ssing...

Shower pump giving up after 5 minutes?

Hi all, More misery from SJ I'm afraid... I have had a pumped shower for yonks and it has always worked fine. CW is fed from a separate take-off from the tank in the loft, HW from an Essex flange from the HW tank in the airing cupboard - never any problems with pressure. All pipework to...

    13 amp supply to loft

Moving on a bit... I now have a redundant 6mm T&E that fed the old electric shower. It is on a dedicated breaker in the consumer unit. I am looking to install underfloor heating inthe bathroom, but was struggling to find a neat and easy way of getting a decent power supply to it from the...

Surrey flange (possibly the silliest question ever...)

No... Not 30 stone, and deffo NOT naked! Suzie Jarvis is the nickname my old man gave me when I was a kid. (TBH, actual nickname was Sexy-Suzie-Jarvis and no, I've no idea why...) I'm 60kg, 48 years young, out of practice when it comes to DIY (too many years off the tools and behind a desk)...
