    Can you cope?

Hi All! Dunno if it's OK to piggyback onto here or start afresh. I'm trying to fit some pencil top mdf skirting to a room, having never done coping/scribing before. I've watched loads of youtube vids, but they all scribe complicated shaped skirting, not this simple rounded top one. It has, a 6mm...

    Mini Clubman/Countryman servicing info?

Had to hire a car last week for 2 days and it was an Aygo X. Flippin' 'eck! soooo much technology! I kept thinking "so much to go wrong" ... and "what chance has a mere mortal got to fix it if/when it does". Actually I couldn't even start it! Didn't know that with "modern cars" you have to press...

    Mini Clubman/Countryman servicing info?

Hi All! My son in his early 30s has never driven, now has a young family and is coming to live with us in the UK after being abroad for 9 years. He's anxious to want to learn to drive asap, and I'd like to get him a smallish suitable family car. I watched an episode of Wheeler Dealers Dream Car...

    Qq? on renewing skirting

Thanks All! I'm going with Johnny2007* 'cos at 6.18pm when his post came thro' I rushed off down to Toolstation and bought a 7.5kg bag of One Coat. Thanks for the headsup on the sticky foam.... I've learned something new there! * I seem to remember an action cartoon character called Johnny...

    Qq? on renewing skirting

Hi Peeps! I'm unsure how best to approach this, so thought I'd ask for your esteemed opinions. A bedroom I'm fitting out has that rather mundane chamfered 7cm skirting, which I'd like to replace with something a bit more modern, like pencil top stuff. Anyway, this bedroom on the 1st floor is an...

    Ceiling crack returned after replastering.

Hi Wayners! Thanks for your advice! I managed to buy a scraper like yours from Brewers Decorators Centre, with a triangular blade, and fitted noggins and screwed up into them and into the joists. Used the fibafuse tape then filled with Troupret filler. Now a question about that filler: Can you...

    Stubborn screw removal

Too true! I bought one of their sliding bevels a few years ago, and when I came to use it for the 1st time recently, found that the 'wooden' stock is actually brown plastic and consequently doesn't flex so the wing nut doesn't tighten the gap with the sliding bit, so it doesn't pinch it to stop...

    Stubborn screw removal

The reason that the brass ones came out is that they didn't rust. If you want to be able to unscrew your new steel screws in 10+ years time, then before you screw them into the wood, dip the threads in grease or vaseline. I think the impact drivers mentioned are the type that you wack with a...

    Insulating loft Qq?

Hi Robin! Yes that's what I'm thinking - but more that I'm walking on it quite often - it's the highest central part of the loft and I walk on it to get to the lower roof section where I store my stuff.... and wondering about relieving it of some of the weight to minimise the risk of the ceiling...

    Insulating loft Qq?

Thanks Everyone for finding time to answer - very much appreciated. Boards sit on 5 inch high standoffs I made from chipboard, (so not quite 300mm of insulation!) I'll check if downlighters are firerated.. good point, hope they are.

    Insulating loft Qq?

Hi All! 2 questions actually... No, 3...Am about to re-lay loft insulation over a bathroom after a refit which included led downlighters. Can't get any info from supplier of downlighters if it's OK to insulate over the top of them, so assume it's not. Q1: can you get covers for the...

Consumer unit change - needs isolator fitting?

Hi, wonder if you'd like to see this pic of this STABLOK mcb/rcd made by Federal Electric that I rescued from a skip recently. Looks like NOS too. Obviously can't find a use for it, which is prob. why it was in the skip in the 1st place! If anyone would like it for their museum, drop me a line...

What to use to repair damage caused by removing skirting boards?

A test is to get a bit of the plaster, put it in a glass and add some vinegar. If it fizzes then it's lime plaster.
