Painting pine and mdf (at the same time!)

I have MDF door frames, and pine skirting and architrave. I'm confused over what primer and undercoat I need. I see Ronseal sell multi surface primer, which is ok for wood and mdf, but then what undercoat do I need? I'm confused as lots of products don't mention if they are ok for mdf...

    Finishing pine stairs (staning?)

I need to pain the handrails, spindles and sides of the stairs I have. They are new stairs and are made of pine. I'm carpeting the treads, so I don't have to worry about the pine being walked on. I would like a darker colour, maybe a sort of cherry or oak colour. I'm struggling to...

Adding a radiator to existing system

Actually, just had a thought. My boiler has the optional filling loop installed making it easy to add pressure (water) to the system. On the CH exit on the boiler there is a drain cock. If I can just isolate the boiler I should be able to flush the sytem using the drain cock (if I don't...

Adding a radiator to existing system

I'm adding a radiator to an existing boiler system that was installed last year (Worcestor 30SI boiler). I'm trying to keep the amount of flux added to the system down to a minimum by flushing out most of the new pipework, but obivously when I connect the new pipe work to the old it will then...

Attaching Soundproofing to brick wall - help

I'll shortly be attaching some soundproofing board, namely the stuff below: http://www.ikoustic.co.uk/Brick__Block_Walls/cat857926_1610077.aspx to my brick walls. The bricks are flat. What I want to know is the best way. The instructions suggest screws with wall plugs, which is fine...

    Stud wall question

I need to make a stud wall. And have one question: When you have a sutd wall at right angles to a brick wall, does the first stud go tight against the brick wall or do you leave a gap for expansion? Thanks,

    Straps for holding pipework

I'm after a metal or plastic strap that has holes in it so I can nail it to wood. I'm sure something like exists, but can't seem to find it anywhere. The idea is it wraps around the pipe or insulation and then I can tack it onto ground level floor joists. Does such a thing exist? Thanks.

    Stupid question about square washers

Round washer, I didn't think another washer would be needed with a big square washer on it. Just started to think tonight if aswell as spreading the load is there another reason instead of just a very large round washer.

    Stupid question about square washers

This is probably a stupid question but what is the purpose of square washers over round washers on timber? Do the square washers have to be level against then timber, I.e. top of the washer is level and flat? Cheers!

    Loft conversion general question

Moving an internal wall isn't a problem at all (as there are no internal walls at the moment - I've taken them all down to replace them). I don't plan on having a dormer window, just the velux that is already up there (previous owner had an attempt at a loft conversion). I really would...

    Loft conversion general question

One thing I wasn't sure on, is from what I've read you have have a ladder going up to the loft. I can't seem to find if you are allowed a vertical fixed ladder or not?

    Loft conversion general question

Thanks for the input people. At the moment the stairs from ground to first floor aren't in any rooms. Bottom of the stairs is next to the front door.

    Loft conversion general question

Yep, thanks for that. I'll post some dimensions up at a later date, but things keep changing all the time (small changes that make a big difference), such as extra step on the stairs etc. It might be a good idea for view the loft conversion as an add on to the 3rd bedroom or have the 3rd...

    Loft conversion general question

Bit of an odd question, which I can't seem to find any answer for, so thought I'd post it up in here. My semi is a 3 bedroom house, but the 3rd bedroom is very small. The loft is so big that I wish to do a loft conversion. I'm struggling to figure out where I can put the loft stairs due...

    Question about Combi boiler system

OK thanks, I'm paying quite a bit more than that, but I've added lots of extras, such as the radiator flush, extended plumbing, moving the boiler (so new brickwork) etc etc. Can't remember the exact price now.

    Question about Combi boiler system

Hi, Thanks for the replies but they aren't really much help. As for the price, I've gone with British Gas for certain reason, which are irrelvant to the question. The reason I want to remove the stuff is to gain access to other areas while I completly renovate my house. If the stuff...

    Question about Combi boiler system

I have a boiler on order from British Gas (a worcester 30SI), and I'm in the process of removing the old boiler system in the house. So far I have removed the following: 1. Cold water storage 2. Expansion tank 3. Hot water tank in the bathroom Is this correct I take it I don't need...

Question about building a stud wall

Ok thanks. I've also been looking at what screws to use on the chipboard. Think I'm going to use TurboGold or TurboUltra 5x60mm screws from screwfix. Joists are 175mmx75mm, and chipboard is 22mm. So the length needs to be 2.5x22mm = 55mm (so I can use 60mm), 5x seems wide enough, and...
