Finishing pine stairs (staning?)

I need to pain the handrails, spindles and sides of the stairs I have.

They are new stairs and are made of pine.

I'm carpeting the treads, so I don't have to worry about the pine being walked on.

I would like a darker colour, maybe a sort of cherry or oak colour.

I'm struggling to find definitive information on whats the best way to do this.

Some people say sand, conditioner, stain then poly....

You could coat it with a microporous stain of suitable colour...pinenot
