Changing a pine stair handrail to oak finish

Hi, I have stripped my stair handrail back to bare wood. The wood appears to be pine, some very white and some a slightly reddish colour. My question is, would it be possible to stain the wood to give a light oak colour or would I be wasting my time. I have tried to stain pine before and got a very blotchy unattractive result. Is there a way to get an even oak look ?

Assuming that you have removed all traces of the previous finish, apply SPIRIT based stain with brush and immediately remove the excess with a rag.

You can get danish oil premixed with oak dye , because it’s in oil gives very even finish .(or mix your own).
