    Strange radiator leak

Just had the central heating on for the 1st time this season, and have discovered a fairly significant leak (2-3 ltrs over 4 hours) on the return valve side of a towel rad which was actually shut off at the valves. Not easy to see exactly where it was leaking from but it stopped on opening the...

Boiler recommendation to replace Alpha HE CB25

We have a 4 year old Alpha HE CB25 combi to heat part of our offices (approx. 12 rads) and supply hot water. It's spent more time broken than working and rather than try and get it fixed i just want to replace it with something more reliable. Office are only 4 years old and it was a new build...

    Programmable Room Stat Recommendations

Just had a new Grant 15/26 Outdoor boiler fitted + Albion Ultrasteel 210 unvented tank. System now comprises 1 underfloor heating circuit & 17 rads + hot water. Plumbers quote excluded thermostats and i didn't realise that I no longer needed a central heating programmer but can run the whole...

    Which oil boiler?

Currently extending my house and it looks like I won't be able to re-site my old Worcester Bosch 12/14 oil boiler so I guess it's time to buy a new condensing one. Had one set of plumbers out who seemed liked good guys but they only fit Worcester Bosch boilers and I'm sure I've read mixed...

In the process of building a nex extension and thinking of running underfloor heating combined with an air source heat pump. Extension is 2 storey, kids playroom downstairs with 2 beds and a bathroom above, total floor area around 65-70 sq metres. Currently on oil heating so would like to...

    New Oil Boiler time?

I'm just about to start an extension on my house and as I will need to re-locate my current boiler, I wonder if it may just better to replace with a new one. It's a 3 bed semi of approx. 2000 sq ft and the boiler is a 15-20 year old Worcester Bosch 12/14 running 14 rads. The boiler has just been...

Boiler repair quote seems a bit steep

Just been at my father-in-laws and they have a problem with their BAXI 105E combi boiler. The diagnosis by a local plumber is a faulty diverter valve and pressure vessel diaphragm but the quote to do the work is £610 inc VAT which sounds like an awful lot of money. I'm no plumber but this does...

    Jubosil?

Anyone used this stuff and is it any good? My house rendering is blown in a few areas and I've had a quote to hack off the loose patches of tyrolene and make good with HP Polymer mortar then have 2 coats of Jubosil on top. I'm told that is will be colour fast and waterproof for 15 years. The...

    Insulating Electric Underfloor Heating

I currently have electric undefloor heating in my conservatory under a laminate floor. My wife now wants me to replace this with Karndean going through to my kitchen. The heating mat current sits on an insulating foam underlay but as the Karndean will required a screeded floor this is not...

    Karndean vs Lotus Flooring

I need a new floor covering for my kitchen, Direct Floors are offering Lotus flooring as a direct equivalent to Karndean Van Gogh, has anyone used it and if so, is it any good? Also, is there any fitters in the North Yorks (Harrogate) area that would be interested in a bit of work or can...

    Oil usage + scrappage/new boiler

Anyone got a rough idea of hourly usage of a Worcester 12/14 boiler assuming it's running constantly, I'm running a little low on oil but refuse to pay the current 50p/litre as it'll be back down to 35p in a month. However if I do run out the wife give me some serious grief :!: :( Also, the...

Underfloor heating - is it possible with my current boiler

I have a Worcester 12/14 oil fired boiler running 14 radiators throughout the house. Hoping to have a new kitchen fitted this year and to free up some wall space I'm thinking of removing the 2 kitchen radiators and replacing them with piped underfloor heating. The existing concrete floor needs...

    Tyrolean - Poor quality job

Had my house re-rendered approx. 2 years ago, this involved completely removing all old render back to brickwork. I used a 'friend of a friend' and the job was completed in about 3-4 weeks and £12,500 later. This cost included me purchasing the raw material and then paying him a mixture of cash...

Oil Boiler Service - what should it include?

Booked my WorcesterDanesmoor 12/14 Oil boiler in for a service on Wednesday as it's not been serviced for 3 years. Last service I had the burner was replaced however my plumber has since retired so I'm using one recommended by my oil supplier as it gives me a free breakdown cover with...

should I use F4 Leak sealer?

I've been slowly replacing all the rads in my house, last week I replaced another 3 and took the opportunity whilst drained down to fit a Magnaclean too. I'm running Fernox F3 cleaner through it for a week and will drain down again this weekend to put in Fernox F1 Inhibitor. The highest rad...

    Draining rads with TRV's

I have to remove some radiators this evening but they have TRV's which if I'm not mistaken don't close the valve off completely as the minimum setting is the frost setting. So how do I do it, is it just a case of removing the TRV head or is there more to it than that. TRV's are Drayton TRV4's.

    Chrome Pushfit Isolating Valve

Need to move some radiators in the morning, to save draining down the entire system I was considering using the JG Push Fit Chrome Isolating Valves. I'd welcome any opinions on them, as once fitted they'll be under a brand new floor so will only be accessed if absolutely neccesary. I'm a...

    Can you double up underlay?

Just wondered if you can double up carpet underlay, I've got Seventh Heaven fitted and it's just about OK but was considering upgrading to Cloud Nine Cumulus. Before I do this I've enough spare Seventh Heaven to go over the existing stuff but not sure if its recommended or not.

Need a new combi drill for general DIY use, Screwfix have a couple of offers on 18V Makita's and there's also an additional 10% this weekend. 1. Makita 83191 Ni-Cad inc 3 batteries £99 2. Makita BHP452 Li-Ion inc 1 battery £149 No. 2 is probably a better drill but the single battery...
