Hi everyone,
Well the weather is looking to be better next week and I'm on leave so planning on doing a bit more landscaping in the garden. I'm going to excavate the bottom part of the garden (bounded by the yellow line in the model). There is a clay paver path to be laid on top of sharp sand...
Hi,
I’m mulling over the best way of laying clay paver edging at the perimeter of my garden (by the fence). I will be laying decorative gravel with a stabilisation grid and want the edging to restrain the gravel. Can I lay the edging on concrete which is laid directly on top of the soil or do I...
Hi everyone,
I'm planning to make a corner bench out of cedar like the one in the picture. I have a lot of spare cedar (18mm x 44mm section) from another project which I can use for the slats. I'm now looking into how I will assemble it. Cedar is very soft and I want a sturdy bench so I'm...
Hi everyone,
I'm ticking along with the garden landscaping and now starting to make up the cedar panels for the screen/pergola thing (See sketchup image)....
I used a number of 150x150mm oak posts and made a frame that sits on the insides of the posts (See photo). The cedar battens are 44mm...
Hi everyone,
I’ve levelled my garden by creating a small retaining wall between an upper and lower level - see pic. I will need to dig down about 20 cm from the current ground level by the wall on the lower section in order to level it. I’m then planning to gravel the bottom area up to the...
Hi,
I have some posts which I have concreted into the ground and I want to form a more decorative top so that soil will not be in contact with the post and water will run away. See the photo. Basically the blue part will be new concrete and I need to bond it to the bass already there.
Any...
Hi!
I'm having some cedar battens delivered tomorrow and will be starting to make the panels shortly. I have an Evolution 255DB+ compound mitre saw which has worked well for me so far. I currently have multipurpose blade that came with the saw on it. Do you think I should buy a fine wood...
Hi everyone,
I’m currently mid garden redevelopment and I have a fair amount of waste (bagged soil), wood, concrete, general garden waste (see photo). I am soon to start excavating the area shown by the yellow boundary and am looking for micro diggers and dumpers etc. what is the best way to...
Hi everyone,
I’m starting to think about designing lighting for my garden. I’ve considered a mains powered system however I like the idea of being able to install myself and to be able to add to it in the future. I’m now considering a low voltage lighting system with elements of it plugged into...
Hi!
I'm looking to get buy some red cedar battens 18mm x 44mm x 1830mm. What I am trying to achieve is shown in the pic. As ever there seems to be lots of different suppliers and it is very expensive but I'm happy to pay fofr the finish/longevity/looks. I was wondering whether anyone can...
Morning,
I have laid a patio with an Aco channel drain at one end. The slabs next to the drain have about 5mm gap and are about 5mm higher than the side of the drain.
I have Sika Fastfix jointing compound to joint the patio. What is the best way to joint the drain gap? Obviously it needs to...
Hi,
I've bought some Eurpoean green oak timber and am now thinking about the best way to fix the crossbeams (2) to the 150 x 150mm posts (1). The decorative rafters (3) on top will also need fixing.
I know normal screws/bolts will rust so I should use stainless steel. Given the assembly I...
Hi,
I need to source 150mm x150mm x 3m Oak posts for a pergola/screen structure. I also need 150mm x 50mm x 24m oak beams.
Can anyone recommend a supplier? I've found a few but there are a fair distance from me and charge almost £180 for delivery. I'm in Fleet, hampshire.
Many thanks,
Ed
Hi,
I now have a design for the screen structure (see image below) that I want to build in the corner of the garden. I've been trying to find the planning rules for this type of structure but cannot find any. Can someone point me in the right direction please? I have found lots of different...
Hi everyone,
I’m mulling over pergola design for our garden. Still haven’t decided exactly what we want but one design is basically an L shape around the patio area. I was going to secure the posts into the soil with postcrete, like a fence post. Then we’ll be able to plant climbers that climb...
Hi everyone,
I’m going to be laying sub base for the patio soon and have woven geotextile fabric to put down beneath it. Ideally I’d like to knock in some pegs at the required sub base height at various points to help me gauge levelling etc but that will mean the fabric will have holes in it...
Hi everyone,
I'm thinking about getting some Bexhill Clay pavers from here https://www.chelmervalley.co.uk/paver-brick/brick-pavers/bexhill/
I have never laid pavers before but would like to lay a path very similar to the one in the attached photo:
The pavers are 200mm x 58mm x 48mm and I...
Hi everyone,
I’m soon to be laying Indian Sanstone slabs in my garden and am looking for recommendations for a good value slurry primer?
There seems to be loads out there.
Cheers,

Hi,
I’m going to lay some concrete edging (915mm x 150mm x50mm ) in the next few days. I’ve seen a few videos where the concrete is quite dry under the concrete edging blocks and then wetter for the haunching. Is this what I should be aiming for?
Many thanks,
Ed
